Most people will experience the pain of burglary at some point in their lives. One person has decided to make the burglars themselves feel this pain.

There are many products available that aim to deter and stop thieves. But 61-year-old Ray Taylor of Wolverhampton, England, found that nothing commercially available could sate his desire for revenge.

It all started a few years ago, when crime began surging in his area.

Taylor is an electrician, and all too often, he’d be at a customer’s home, fixing their wiring, and when he’d go out to his van, he’d discover that some thief had taken his valuable equipment.

Taylor experienced this again and again, until he’d had enough. One day, he decided to estimate how much money he’d lost due to thievery in the last few years. He came to a shocking figure: $6,000.

He looked online into ways of preventing the thieves, but nothing seemed to give him the protection he was looking for. Then he got creative.

Thanks to being a skilled electrician (or sparky, as they say in the UK) Taylor was able to rig something up that would ensure that thieves stopped targetting his van.

In no time at all, Taylor had invented a home security system that was shockingly effective, literally.

Rigged onto the van’s door handles were electrical wires that fed into a battery system inside. And when the system was turned on, it would ensure that anyone who tried opening the door would get a 1,000 volt electrical shock.

It sounds deadly, but Taylor, being an expert, assures everyone that it isn’t. In fact, the device was made from a fly swatter. So unless a fly tries to gain entrance to the van via the doors, all it will do is give a terrible surprise.

The electrician made it clear that his shock system was perfectly legal. In fact, he’d even called the police and asked them about the legality. They assured him that as long as he put a warning sign on the van, it wouldn’t get him into any problems with the cops.

That sounds like the police want to see it in action!

But Taylor had more improvements to make.

Anyone who touches the van’s doors while the security system is active is sure to make a squeal. But the electrician wanted anyone nearby to be alerted to the hapless thieves that messed with the wrong van. So he also added the mother of all alarm systems onto it. That meant that anyone who tried to break into the vehicle would not only get shocked, but also be greeted with a 120-decibel siren. That’s almost as loud as the sound of a military jet taking off!

After installing the siren, Taylor had another stroke of genius.

He decided that he could implement one final security measure, as icing on the cake: strobe lighting. The effect of the strobe lights, if triggered after dark, would make it so that anyone trying to break in would soon become disorientated and likely fall over.

Just imagine being a thief, thinking that you can make a quick buck by breaking into Taylor’s work van.

Then you get to the door, yank it and feel 1,000 volts surging through your body. You try to get away, but a deafening siren rings out. And then strobe lights make you blind, so you fall onto the ground.

It’s lucky that Taylor is someone who works in an honest profession. Imagine what he would do if he used his powers for evil!
