Owner gets emotional watching her dog with no legs run for the 1st time using pair of prosthetics
Dogs get dumped for a lot of reasons. It could be that the owner is no longer financially capable to support their dog’s needs, aging dogs, they may be messing up too much stuff at home, infertility for female dogs, sickly or disabled dogs, and a whole lot more.
When talking about disabled dogs, truth be told, these dogs don’t really know that they’re disabled because dogs are playful in nature. They run from here to there, cuddle with people, spin and move around, and hop everywhere.
These qualities make them the best animal companions at home. Unfortunately, some people do not have the heart to keep a disabled dog. As soon as the owner realized that their dog couldn’t perform its duties, they are immediately deemed useless.
More often than not, these dogs are expected to be either given to animal shelters or worse – abandoned.
Thankfully, a place like the Safe in Austin Rescue Ranch in Texas is there to embrace these animals.
To them, these imperfections make animals perfect! There, not a single animal gets neglected. It’s where wounded animals heal and the dumped gets all the love in the world.
Safe in Austin Rescue Ranch in Texas is not just a shelter for rescued animals but also a place where animals inspire humans. Wouldn’t you agree that sometimes, animals teach us the most valuable lessons in life?
They are doing exactly what their Facebook intro says, “We rescue the animals that need us, so they can turn around and rescue the children that need them”.
When you feel like being disabled or having special needs makes life hopeless, these rescued animals will show you otherwise.
Some animals at the shelter are also disabled but it doesn’t show and that’s where they inspire people, especially children. They set an example that proves we are bigger than what we think.
One example was when a child named Harper Wulms who has a congenital hand abnormality visited the animal shelter and met a rescued turkey, Priscilla. The latter has a “lucky claw”, and when the two met, it was magical.
It sparked a healing effect that not even science could explain.
“There is something absolutely magical about watching a child with differences come out here and say, ‘They’re just like me,’ ” the sanctuary’s founder Jaime Wallace-Griner told The Washington Post. “When you see Harper holding Priscilla’s lucky hand with her own lucky hand, it just does so much for her heart.”
Safe in Austin is a sanctuary for these animals with special needs.
They host not only turkeys like Priscilla but also dogs, goats, pigs, horses, chickens, and a bunch of other animal species. There, these animals found nothing but love and acceptance.
“We have animals that are blind or deaf, have diabetes, cerebral palsy, deformities, missing limbs, broken spines … they all become part of our family,” Wallace-Griner said.
It’s time to meet Halo!
Her heartless owner decided to abandon her in a box. Sadly, this Great Pyrenees puppy ended up having her back legs amputated and her two front reconstructed.
However, despite her physical condition, she never seemed to have felt any different compared to other dogs with feet. She’s as sweet as ever with her radiant aura and positive attitude.
The time came for Halo to have her very first pair of prosthetic legs.
In the past, Halo kept her mobility by hopping around, but things were about to change for her. They received a pair of prosthetic legs from OrthoPets and everyone can’t wait for Halo to try them on.
As Wallace-Griner was trying to put them on to Halo, it’s evident that they’re both ecstatic to see how it’s going to work. That day, she just wanted the sweet little girl to have them on but little did she know, Halo had another plan.
Instead of just fitting the prosthetic legs, the excited dog immediately tried standing on them. Soon after, Halo started to hop on the and run off with them! It’s nowhere close to what Wallace-Griner was expecting.
“I have no words. I can’t believe it,” Wallace-Griner wrote on Facebook.
It’s indeed a brand new life for little Halo and we can’t wait to see what’s next for her.
“It’s been an insane rollercoaster of challenges and emotions over the last year. From the moment I brought this little wounded, 4-week-old, one-legged fluff ball home, I knew she was something special! Look what we did guys. Just look at our Halo go!”
In fact, Wallace-Griner even started shedding tears as she was watching that incredible moment.
