Emotional reunion of a man with his deaf and blind senior cat
A man from California, Raymond McNamara, had been living with his favorite pet, a Himalayan cat. A few months ago, the pair were traveling together to the other side of the country all the way to Florida.
It was February and the two best friends were in Florida exploring the place, when at some point, McNamara turned his head and realized Lily the cat was not there anymore. Given Lily’s old age – she’s 20 years old- and her health issues- she is deaf and blind- it was very difficult for the man to locate her.
Lily was too old to run towards him if she smelled him, and her condition also didn’t let her hear him call her or see him from a distance and try to reach him. The whole mission of finding her sounded like it was bound to fail.
But McNamara didn’t give up. He called the local police and he also teamed up with the local animal control to search for his beloved pet.
“Animal control and the police department were looking for her when she was first lost. He stirred up a lot of attention because he was frantic,” Kathy Bieniek, vice president of Saving Sage Animal Rescue in Miami told ABC News.
The search party looked for Lily for days but it was all in vain. The senior kitty was nowhere to be seen. Eventually, they gave up, especially as the weather conditions were not helping them.
McNamara had to compromise with the fact that he would never see his cat again and that she was possibly dead by then. After all, she was very old and she was unfamiliar with the place and weather conditions thereof.
So, the man returned to California convinced that his kitty was gone. He was devastated.
After two months, however, something unexpected happened. A woman from South Florida spotted a cat at a construction site, which is practically exactly where Lily had been lost in the first place.
Dirty, sick, and matted, the senior cat was taken to the local animal shelter. The local authorities immediately knew it was Lily.
“She was in the exact same spot where she was lost,” Bieniek explained. “She did not move from the spot. She was waiting for her daddy to get her.”
But, although Lily had survived, she was in poor condition. She had several medical issues she developed while in the wild and she had to be treated with extra care. In fact, vets said that if she hadn’t been found by that woman, she would not have lasted long.
“She was very dehydrated and very sick,” said Daniel Rayment, the hospital’s veterinary practice manager. “She had some liver issues. We hospitalized her, put her on IV fluids.”
In the meantime, the shelter reached out to McNamara to inform him that they had found Lily. He couldn’t believe it.
After a few weeks, the man made it back to Florida and was reunited with his lost friend. Their reunion involved lots of hugs, cuddles, purrs, and, of course, tears.
As McNamara said, Lily’s never going to get away from him again!
