We’ve all heard the rhetoric and articles about how “X” generation is lazy or “Y” generation doesn’t work hard. When we see and read those things, it’s important to remember that it’s really easy to put groups of people into neat boxes, but that doesn’t mean it’s nice, or even correct! The story of one young man shows us just that; there are plenty of people willing to work hard and go the extra mile in their jobs.

Walter Carr is a young man from Alabama who had just gotten a new job.

Carr was looking forward to his first day. The new job, a position at a moving company named Bellhops, was going to be big for him and provide some new opportunities in his life.

Unfortunately, things went horribly wrong.

The night before his first shift, his car broke down. To make matters worse, it was nearly 20 miles to the job site, a nearly insurmountable distance for someone on foot. Well, for most it would have been insurmountable. For Carr, it was an opportunity to show his grit.

Waking up at midnight, Carr put on his walking shoes and a comfy shirt to make the nearly 20-mile walk to the job the next day.

Yes, you heard that right; walking from midnight until the morning, just to make it to the site on time. If that isn’t dedication, nothing is! Thankfully, his plan, as well-intentioned as it was, wasn’t destined to be completed. During the walk, a police officer noticed the young man walking and pulled over to ask him where he was going.

After learning that Carr was trying to walk the 20 miles to the site, the officer was shocked.

Offering the tired man a ride in his car, the officer was willing to help. Since it was still early (Carr had set aside time for the walk and wasn’t anticipating a ride), the two stopped for breakfast and the officer covered it.

Arriving at the job site, the officer told the woman who was moving what had happened.

“Around 6:30am the doorbell rang. It was a police officer. He proceeded to tell us that he had picked up ‘this nice kid’ in Pelham early this morning. The nice kid. Walter, said that he was supposed to help us with our move today”

Carr, incredibly, declined the offer to take a rest and decided to get started on moving the things into the home! Once the story got out, people were shocked. Soon, Luke Marklin, the CEO of Bellhops, met with Walter and had a big surprise.

Knowing that this was a dedicated kid, Marklin had decided to gift him a new car so he wouldn’t have to walk anymore!

“I’d like to give you this car right here. Today. Like right now. Like you can drive away with it,” Marklin told him.

As most people would be, Carr was totally shocked. Somehow, his planned walk had showed the world just how hard of a worker he was, and it had totally paid off! No more waking up at 12 am to walk 20 miles!
