Clever engineer transforms Volkswagen Bugs into incredible motorbikes

When you buy a car, you’re just buying a hidden motorbike, this engineer believes.

The advantages that cars have over motorbikes are pretty obvious.

They’re significantly more comfortable, allow more passengers to ride along with you, have trunks. The list goes on.

But motorbikes are undeniably really cool vehicles.

One designer even turns one of the world’s most common cars into motorbikes.

His name is Brent Walter, and he transforms Volkswagen Beetles into nifty minibikes.

Walter calls them Volkspods. And just look at them!

They look like what people thought the future would look like in the 1950s! In fact, can you be sure that they don’t hover off the ground? (Yes.)

The VW logo is to be found on the front of the bike, on the side of the bike, and on the footrest, ensuring that its origins are well and truly on display.

The original fenders that make up the body of the bikes used to look very different.

Yes, Walter’s choice of color really goes far in making the Volkspods look retro.

Just imagine if he’d left the fenders in the condition that he found them in. They’d be far less showy!

The first Volkspod that Walter made was the greener one.

This is equipped with a 79cc engine, which is significantly less than any Volkswagen Beetle’s natural engine. But the bikes zip along just fine.

Then Walter decided to go down a slightly different route with the second Volkspod.

He fit it with a 212cc motor. He also added more ground clearance to the body, meaning that it can perform better on the roads, which, let’s face it, is a pretty important part of having a vehicle!

At first, Walter was not intending to make any more than two Volkspods.

But then he posted them to Instagram and was flooded with interest. So the engineer got to work on a third Volkspod.

He may soon end up making a lot of money off of the creations!

For Walter, making Volkspods and other inventions started out as a hobby.

For a career, he manufactures medical devices. Obviously, medical devices are more important than minibikes.

And the creation of the Volkspod came about as an afterthought.

At first, Walter was just modifying a Volkswagen Beetle, and he ended up with the fenders left out of the design. That was when he had the idea to turn them into their own vehicles.

The only issue with Walter turning the Volkspods into a business is that Volkswagen Beetles with the right fenders may eventually become hard to find.

The final Volkswagen Beetle to have the classic fender was made in 2003. Yes, there had been 21 million sales of this model over the years, which means that, in theory, there are many out there. But cars have a tendency to get sent to the junkyard. How many could Walter get his hands on before they start to disappear?

Still, right now, Walter has three Volkspods of his own. He loves to ride them and show them off. He’s happy with what he’s made, as he should be. They look incredible!
