Internet labels military spouse “entitled” after leaving note on her receipt

Do you think military spouses should get the same benefits as those serving?

That’s the question Reddit users were forced to confront when a viral photo began circulating on the forum site.

The picture showed what appears to be a social media post with a caption giving an “earful” to an establishment.

Belonging to a military family is difficult. With one member being away for long amounts of time and in the middle of the most dangerous situations, their families are faced with psychological and emotional challenges.

To support these families some establishments offer military discounts.

They hope that through these initiatives, military families can feel that they’re loved and appreciated.

Some of these discounts may only extend to the service member, but some of them can be availed by spouses or children

And while it varies, these discounts do exist and these are benefits that are voluntarily given by stores.

However, some military spouses can go overboard with these benefits.

Some of them are accused of being entitled.

If it’s a coping mechanism or something else entirely, we can’t be too sure.

In the said Reddit post, a military spouse left a very interesting note on their receipt. It was full of expletives on how they didn’t get the treatment they think they deserved.

“When I became a military spouse, I thought I would get free stuff. WTF!” the caption on the post said, “Military spouses deserve drinks for free. F*** this place! We serve our asses off way more than anyone!”

The photo and the caption divided people but most of them are not in favor of how this military spouse handled the situation.

Some of them gave back more scalding comments like,

“I don’t get how someone can be so insane to try and exploit their husband risking his life. ‘My husband is willing to die for your freedom, so give me free drinks!’”

While the issue is controversial in itself, we can all agree that this situation could’ve been handled more diplomatically. These “non-monetary” benefits are given but not expected. Some stores may not have the capacity to extend discounts for everyone.

But what kind of benefits can military spouses expect?

Military families of active-duty personnel – regardless of which branch they serve in – receive healthcare benefits through the military’s healthcare.

Military families also receive a housing allowance, especially when their spouses are stationed on far-off bases. Most of the time, this is for families who relocate near the base. But some families just can’t go to where their spouses are.

Fortunately, these housing allowances are meant to cover most of the rent.

Some institutions also help military families with day-to-day expenses.

The Defense Commissary Agency or (DeCA) runs commissaries that sell grocery items at a lower cost. Most military bases are also home to department stores called “exchange”. They also have gas stations, liquor stores, and fast food. Since most of the goods from these stores are tax-exempt, military families can take advantage of the prices of more expensive items like electronics and furniture.

With all of these benefits they can enjoy, do you think this military spouse is right for doing what she did?

No matter the answer, we’re just praying that their active-duty spouse is doing well and is on their way home soon.
