It can be fun to try and imagine what a dog understands about the world around them. Unlike cats, dogs understand that they are a different species from humans. They do seem to like us though, and we love them back in return!

Whether or not a dog can understand that a large horse is not a dog nor a human is something we are not sure about. Somehow, this important bit of research has gone unexplored. It’s not clear if the French bulldog in this video is aware that the large NYPD police horse is not another dog, but one thing is very certain, they really want to play with them.

How dogs invite others to play with them.

An article published to National Geographic in 2020 looked at a study that showed horses and dogs share a similar language related to play.

“A dog’s invitation to play is unmistakable: Bowing with his front legs and wagging his tail, he’s basically saying to another dog, Let’s have fun! The two animals then chase and leap and box each other, matching each other’s moves, often with expressions we humans interpret as smiles,” the article reads.

Dog and horses have the same language related to play.

The French bulldog in this story is clearly inviting the horse to play with them. The report would continue to say that horses share many of the same mannerisms related to play as dogs do. This is probably why dogs and horses have been known to get along so well.

“Perhaps most remarkably, the two species also rapidly mirror the expression on the other’s face, a behavior called rapid facial mimicry.”

Excuse me Frenchie but I’m at work right now.

Unfortunately for the little Frenchie, the horse was not free to play with them right at that moment. This was because they are a police horse with the NYPD. Not only that, this video was taken during the Occupy Wall Street movement, so they were a little busy.

The Frenchie and the horse were separated by a barrier and the horse’s work schedule did not permit them to run off and play at that moment. Still, there is something about the horse’s face which could lead one to believe that part of them really wanted to skip out on work and go have a play date with this little dog. We wish they could. Don’t most of us wish we could just skip out on work to play with French bulldogs?

Video of this excited French bulldog jumping around and trying to get the horse to play with them has gone viral online. People just can’t get enough of the little enthusiastic Frenchie. Many people who have viewed the video have left a comment as well.

“Adorable! Our Frenchie, Wally, dances and spins but Luella is much more graceful. Would you share the brand of the harness and sweater Luella is wearing? They look very comfortable and we’d like to see if we can find them in Arizona,” wrote one viewer.
