Little cowgirl yodels her way into millions of hearts
When we think of country music, certain things come to mind. Oftentimes, a cowboy, open land, a dog, a horse, and a story to tell are it.
You wouldn’t necessarily be wrong to think these things but in recent years, country music has become much more than that. In what was once deemed a very exclusive space has (slightly) opened its doors to other aspiring acts.
But would you believe one of those acts to be a little girl yodeling? Believe it or not, it’s true! A little girl named Ezrah Noelle is on her way to becoming a country and yodeling music star. But don’t just take our word for it.
In a video recorded in 2010, Noelle is seen singing a cover of “I Want to Be a Cowboys Sweetheart” at the Centennial Rodeo Opry in OKC’s Stockyards City. Boy, does she knock it out of the park!
The song was originally recorded and written by Ruby Blevins, better known as Patsy Montana, in 1935. The song was a major hit. Montana became the first country female artist to sell more than one million copies of a country song.
Since then, the song has been re-recorded by artists such as The Dixie Chicks, LeAnn Rimes, and Cyndi Lauper. Needless to say, the song has been a staple in the country music industry for quite some time. Therefore, a little girl mustering up the courage to sing such a song is quite phenomenal.
In the video, Noelle sings with a full band backing her. She’s dressed fittingly in knee-high cowboy boots, a blue jean skirt, pink shirt, and a pink cowboy hat. Her long curls drape over her shoulders. She’s a real cowgirl!
The audience sure thinks so. As she begins yodeling, the audience cheers and claps at how effortlessly and clean her yodeling skills are. You won’t blame them once you hear it for yourself! She even begins to side-step while doing so and never misses a note.
If you didn’t know, yodeling isn’t something to be taken lightly. It’s not an easy task. The singer must make rapid pitch changes from a normal or low voice to a higher one (falsetto). Though it’s practiced in various areas around the world, it’s far from mainstream.
Not only is her yodeling spot on but her singing voice is impressive as well. Although she is young, she sure can carry a tune.
Noelle has even developed a following for her singing and yodeling skills. Comments on her video suggest that she’s expected to be around in the industry for many years to come!
“If that’s not the sweetest thing! Great talent for such a young person. Good luck Ezrah Noelle. Enjoyed your yodeling and boot action. haha sweet. -Jimmy”
“So amazing! I just love this little girl so much! What a talent!!”
Towards the end of the song, the tempo speeds up and Noelle keeps her footing, She rides the pace of the song just as she did earlier. This cowgirl won’t be thrown off from this ride. Her voice grips the new tempo and doesn’t let go.
To celebrate completing the ride, she gives a traditional western, “Yeehaw!” at the end of her performance.
Great work, ma’am!
