Cleaning fanatics are sharing how they use fabric softener to clean their toilet

There’s no getting around the dreaded toilet clean. In some cruel trick of fate, the more often we get up close and personal with our toilet bowl, the easier it is to keep it looking and smelling (relatively) fresh on a day to day basis.

The only positive to come out of cleaning the toilet is the satisfaction you can feel after a good job well done. While splashing your loo with a bit of bleach might feel like the simplest way out, it’s not going to make you feel like you’ve achieved much. Using sweet-smelling toilet gels, DIY recipes involving baking soda, and life-saving air fresheners, on the other hand, will leave you feeling like a cleaning pro.

We’re all looking for ways to make our toilets look clean enough to eat our dinner off (though we wouldn’t recommend testing this out). While there are plenty of commercial and homemade methods of toilet cleaning, our favorites are the random cleaning hacks that you never would have thought to try before.

The latest toilet cleaning hack to catch our eye comes from a TikTok user by the name of Amelia Mandeville. Amelia claims to have discovered an absolute godsend for keeping a toilet bowl looking and smelling fresh: fabric softener.

We know what you’re thinking – why did the creator of this hack think to put fabric softener in her toilet in the first place? But like the first person who milked a cow and the first who decided to eat a chicken egg after seeing where it came from, perhaps they don’t really have an answer.

Amelia shows us just how effective her hack is in a TikTok video. She opens by saying,

“So, I saw this thing online where you put fabric conditioner in your toilet, so obviously, I’m going to try it.”

First, she fills up a mug of Comfort fabric softener (not affiliated – we’re sure other branded products work just as well). She then pours the liquid straight into her toilet tank.

According to Amelia, you should wait for at least five minutes to let the solution work its magic.

Five minutes later, true to her word, Amelia returns, informing us that her toilet “smells so good”, thanks to the scent of her fabric softener. The formula has sunk to the bottom of her toilet’s tank, and when she flushes, it goes straight into the bowl.

We don’t know what’s more entertaining – seeing the toilet water turn purple with the fabric softener, or Amelia’s incredibly excited reaction to see her hack actually work.

This might be a relatively simple hack, but surely that’s the beauty of it? In seconds, you can have your whole bathroom smelling fresh and fine, and the hardest job you need to do is measuring out the fabric softener.

The video has been viewed by nearly 2 million people, and has 124,000 likes and 431 comments. Clearly we’re not alone in appreciating how ridiculously simple this is. While it might not disinfect your toilet by any means, it’s perfect for giving it a quick refresh if you don’t have time for anything else, or you have guests coming round and you want to pretend your bathroom is consistently perfect.

You can check out the video yourself below if you want to give the hack a try!
