Inspired by starry nights and fairy tales – these whimsical DIY Fairy Lanterns are gorgeous

Most people have heard of fairy gardens, which are fun for everyone, especially kids. But now, a new trend is getting a lot of attention — fairy lanterns. For this, you create a jar that when lit up, looks as though there’s a fairy inside.

These are super cute and fun to make. During this pandemic, people are looking for all kinds of unique ways to spend their time. For parents, a fairy lantern is a great opportunity to learn to craft but also end up with an amazing work of art they’ll enjoy for years to come.

Enhancing any space

With a fairy lantern, you can bypass stringed lighting often seen on decks and porches. Instead, you’ll have subtle light with both personality and character. These small lanterns create a little bit of magic that makes outdoor and indoor living more enjoyable.

Getting started

Start making your lantern by cutting out whatever silhouette you want for your lantern. When done, move it back and forth a little to make it more pliable. Then dab a small amount of instant glue on the edges. Carefully, place the silhouette inside of the jar. Make sure you position it on the side without any lettering.

Tissue paper

Cut a strip of tissue paper that’ll wrap around the jar, leaving only a small amount of overlap. Then, brush white glue on the entire exterior of the jar (Elmer works great). Place the tissue paper on the glass, working it around until the jar is completely covered, including the bottom. When finished, brush more glue on top of the tissue paper.

Time for glitter

With the tissue paper now in place, apply a small amount of white glue on both the top and bottom of the jar. Be sure not to put any around the thread. Otherwise, the lid won’t close. Also, only use the glitter at the top and bottom of the jar as any more would block out the light.

Adding twine and embellishments

Now, tie a piece of twine around the top of the jar, just below the thread. Then, make a bow but remember you want it to line up with the fairy silhouette inside. Using the other supplies like berries, flowers, and pinecones, place them on top of the twine. To secure them in place, switch over to the instant glue, using just a small dab.

Completing the project

The final step in making a fairy lantern is to place one, preferably two battery-operated tea lights inside of the jar. Then, secure the lid in place. With that done, you can set your new lights wherever you want, inside or outside of the home.

Helpful tips

For superior fairy lanterns, experts share several helpful tips. For instance, for more detailed results, you want to place the figures directly on the glass. To enhance the silhouette effect, use two battery-powered tea lights. Also, don’t go overboard when layering the paper, use a thinner type of glue, and never put real candles in the jar.
