Family adopts oldest dog in shelter – then one day, she let’s them know it’s time

When it comes to adoption, most people wouldn’t choose senior dogs. With their advanced age, they are more prone to health issues. Plus, there’s also the fear that they won’t live long.

Melissa Davis and her daughter Raven are unlike most people when it comes to adopting dogs.

In fact, when they went to the Baltimore Area Rescue Center, they weren’t looking for a puppy. They went there to adopt the shelter’s oldest dog.

According to Raven:

“No one wants an old dog. People think that puppies are more energetic. I don’t want them to die in a shelter.”

There, they met Kaylee.

She’s an 11-year-old American Staffordshire terrier that was given up by her previous owner. Right after meeting her, the family knew she was the right dog for them.

The family shared:

“When they brought her outside to us, I knelt down on the ground and Kaylee leaned into my chest. I knew she was ours right then.”

Kaylee had a lot of health issues prior to the adoption.

The family knew that she had early signs of kidney problems, urinary tract infection, and a torn ACL. Then, two weeks after they brought her home, they were told that Kaylee had another health problem.

She had cancer.

The news left the family heartbroken. However, instead of giving up, everyone worked extra hard to make Kaylee’s last days special.

The family didn’t even think twice about financing the dog’s medical care.

They had been saving for a trip to Disney World. However, after hearing about Kaylee’s condition, everyone agreed to use the money for her care.

Kaylee was a happy dog.

Even with a terminal diagnosis, Kaylee remained a happy and fun-loving dog. She was always smiling and her tail was always wagging. She was probably too happy to be out of the shelter.

The family treated Kaylee like a princess.

Since they didn’t know how much time they had left with their new dog, they decided to make every second count. They wanted her to experience the life she deserved.

They started a bucket list for her!

It was filled with a lot of fun and exciting things. They threw a birthday party for her and took her out for ice cream. They allowed her to eat her very first burger and even served her breakfast in bed.

After seven wonderful months, Kaylee crossed the rainbow bridge.

On that day, the family was able to cross out more items on her bucket list.

She ate steak and eggs, enjoyed a cheese buffet, and even finished a Starbucks puppaccino. She chowed down a chocolate brownie cake with pieces of bacon.

Melissa shares videos of Kaylee on her Facebook account.

Even after Kaylee’s death, she didn’t stop remembering her. In fact, Kaylee’s death encouraged her to work extra hard to achieve her goal. Melissa aims to encourage more people to consider giving senior dogs a warm and loving home.

In one of her posts, she shared:

“Every time one of you adopts a senior dog, she lives on. Every time you share her story, she lives on. Because of all of you, Kaylee’s story doesn’t end here, and I am eternally grateful for that. Kaylee deserves to be remembered.”
