Family downsizes to an RV and now saves tons of money a year while traveling the country

Jennifer Omohundro was listening to a homeschooling podcast when an idea sparked her mind.

Jen was streaming an episode wherein the host shared how she and her family decided to sell their home, bought an RV, lived in it, and toured around the country while homeschooling their children.

She felt a jolt and thought this might be something they could do with her family.

She told her husband, JR, about this; he was not sold at first.

He said that it was a crazy idea and it was a significant change, but he saw the look in his wife’s eyes and knew it was something she would love to do.

So, JR and Jen took the leap of faith, sold their home and everything they owned (including their cars), and looked for a custom RV that would fit perfectly with their lifestyle.

In less than a week, their home was sold, and off they went to their new life.

Jen had been searching for an RV they could live in, and she knew exactly what she wanted and trimmed down their choices based on the RV’s manufacturer, model, engine, and one that was most reliable for their lifestyle.

After an ocular visit, they chose this 2010 Newmar Ventana 3942.

The Omohundros admitted they weren’t skilled enough to do a DIY.

They settled for a finished and furnished RV that fits their budget and lifestyle.

Jen said she and her husband didn’t have the skills to build their RV home from scratch, and they were pressed with time, too.

But that doesn’t mean that it came without a problem.

According to their first vlog, they admitted that there were a lot of learning curves.

They hit some issues in their engine, generator, hot water, furnace, oil leaks, and even their black tank from their toilet.

However, the family was thankful for the community around them that helped them through each one.

The family is now enjoying the life they have in their RV.

From an estimate of 3,000 square foot home down to only 300! It wasn’t easy, but it worked for them.

There’s enough space for everyone, and the interior looks great. The moment you step in, right behind the driver’s seat, you will find a couch, a recliner seat, a dining table, and a mini kitchen.

Further into the RV were the bedroom and their bathroom.

Their kids sleep in bunk beds which gives them their own space.

The bathroom even has a lot of room – bigger than you would expect from a house on wheels.

Lastly, the master’s bedroom has a queen bed with lots of storage space. The bedrooms have a sliding screen to provide privacy.

The Omohundros never thought their crazy decision to do this would give them the life they wanted.

“We’ve had so many experiences as a family that we never would have had without doing this,” said Jen. “We’ve done mountain hikes, swam with whales and ridden on a pedal railway.”

In addition, Jen said that the children enjoy being homeschooled.

And while they followed an online program, their ability to move around the country allowed them to pair the program with real-life experiences. She even tailors the program based on their itinerary.
