Names are important. Obviously, that’s why everybody’s got one. Do you know anyone who doesn’t have a name? Probably not.

It is one of the best ways to identify us in so many ways, and it is the first thing that every newborn is granted as a right of passage into this world.

Naming a puppy is just as important as naming a baby. You want them to learn it quickly so they can start picking up on commands.

People normally name their new pet something that best describes them or, sometimes, any name under the sun. Choosing their own name is something that is generally out of most puppy’s paws. It’s up to their humans to decide, instead.

One family, though, decided to take a different approach.

They found a clever way of letting their new puppy actually pick out his own name, and even had a little naming party for him.

Recently, a certain TikTok user, Erika Maribel, and her family hosted a naming party for their new fur baby.

Instead of throwing the little pup a random name and wrapping things up early, they decided to give him some options.

Erika and her family gathered different name options on a list and wrote each on a folded paper.

They arranged the names and lined it up on the floor. Of course, the puppy wouldn’t have been enticed to pick among the dull-looking folded papers, so they placed a dog treat on top of each.

They then left the final decision up to the as-yet-unnamed puppy to go and pick whichever among the papers he wanted the most.

Everyone sounded excited as there are a lot of people who can be heard screaming in the background.

And the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived!

The little pup had no idea what was happening at that very moment, but he knew one thing for sure; he needed to pick out one of the papers that were lying in front of him.

He ended up choosing the name “Canuto,” which is described as:

“…a charming being who is highly pleasant both for the security and originality that emerges and for his intellectual capacity. Cheerful and communicative, he is somewhat mocking. Dynamic and willful, it can be very persuasive. He has great organizational qualities, which is due in part to his practical intelligence, with an analytical spirit that tends to skepticism or irony.”

Well, it looks like “Canuto” just makes a perfect fit for this little pumpkin.

The video shows how the name picking went down and was shared by Erika on her official TikTok account where it went viral.

As of this writing, the video now has a whopping 1.3 million views, with 347.4 thousand likes, and 1531 comments.

The success of the video just goes to show that a lot of people love the cute idea of giving pets the privilege to choose their own names.

Erika’s family appears to have two other dogs aside from Canuto. We are all looking forward to more videos from this family who treat their dogs with so much importance.
