It has been 47 beautiful years since world-renowned singer and songwriter Dolly Parton released her hit single “Jolene.” But, as they say, classics will never go out of style.

That’s why she’s giving her fans a once in a lifetime chance to participate in a challenge.

Dolly calls this the #JoleneChallenge, and she’s asking the public to share their own version of her song using the said hash-tag.

She made the announcement along with Julianne Hough, the artist who plays the character, Jolene, in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings.

Who is Jolene anyway?

We may have loved the song or even felt that we can relate to the lyrics, but did you ever wonder why Dolly Parton wrote this song?

Dolly shared in an old interview with a Norwegian TV channel that once, she met a beautiful little girl who came up to her for an autograph.

She was smitten by the child’s beauty that she asked for her name, and the little girl replied, “Jolene.”

Dolly said, “Well that’s just about the prettiest name I ever heard. I’m gonna write a song about you and if you ever hear it, you’ll know it was about you.”

But, that’s just the beginning. We now know the reason behind the name, but what about the lyrics?

According to her interview with Independent, it was about a red-head bank teller who began flirting with Dolly’s husband, Carl Dean.

Dolly said, “I wrote that [song] years ago when my husband … was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be. I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry … Had it not been for that woman I would never have written ‘Jolene’ and I wouldn’t have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene.”
