Family on vacation is alerted that someone is at the door then they realize it’s their dog

A short walk for some – a grand adventure for another.

A Kansas family got the surprise of their life when their security camera caught someone knocking on their front door. The family was on a week-long vacation, so they found it strange that they’d have an unexpected visitor.

When they looked at the security feed, they realized that it was someone they did not expect – but it was definitely someone they knew. And that someone shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

Dexter, their dog, was at the door.

And with the way the dog was ringing the doorbell, it seemed like he had just strolled outside and was waiting to be let in. As much as Dexter wanted to sleep in his bed, he didn’t seem to realize that no one was at home.

Meanwhile, a thousand miles away, Jeremy Henson’s phone pinged with a notification. He and his wife were in Las Vegas enjoying their vacation. But why the heck was Dexter outside?!

Apparently, Dexter was a fugitive at large.

Before getting on their flight, the couple had left Dexter at a local doggy daycare where they could ensure he was looked after while they were away. The whole stay was expected to last five days, but by day three Dexter had enough of the homesickness.

Jeremy shared that the great-escape-turned-great adventure was no easy feat, especially for a dog of Dexter’s size.

The doggy daycare is enclosed by a six-foot fence. Whether he jumped or climbed over it, no one knows.

It was only the start of his adventure, however.

From the kennels, he needed to trek through the busy streets and freeways. After crossing into the residential area, Dexter followed his senses and instincts to get home.

His entire adventure was 90 minutes long and covered a distance of 2 miles. It was “home sweet home” for this little pooch, but he forgot one thing: his parents weren’t there.

Jeremy was quick to calm Dexter.

Using the two-way feature, he called for Dexter’s attention so he wouldn’t run off. They then called the daycare to pick up their dog from their house. In the meantime, Jeremy can be heard apologizing to Dexter for leaving him behind.

A short while later, someone from the doggy daycare arrived in a vehicle and brought Dexter back.

Dexter’s parents blame his instincts.

“We adopted Dexter to be a watchdog for my wife while I traveled, and he takes that job very seriously, so that’s probably why he was so determined to come home,” Jeremy told PEOPLE.

When asked if he was surprised about what happened, Jeremy just sighed, laughed, and said, “No.”

He also added that Dexter is a very smart dog.

“Previously, it made me feel safe knowing that whenever anyone came to our doorstep, we would be notified of it. But now, I truly believe that the Ring Doorbell saved my dog’s life.”

“Without it, he may have been stuck outside and wouldn’t have been able to find a warm spot to stay safe,” said Jeremy.
