Most people want to become rich overnight. When this family stumbled upon a huge pile of cash, they spent very little time hesitating what to do.

What’s the most amount of money you’ve ever found on the street. $5? $20? $1 million? One family can say that they’ve found that last sum just lying around. And then they gave that money up.

One Saturday afternoon in May 2020, the Schantz family were on a drive through the country in Caroline County, Virginia. Then they drove over a bag in the road.

The family, thinking that some unthoughtful person had dumped trash, stopped the car and collected up the bag they’d run over. They threw the bag in the back of the truck, hoping to dispose of the trash later.

When the family got home, Emily Schantz opened up the bag to see what was inside. At first, she was disappointed to see a bunch of little plastic bags.

Emily looked at one of these bags closer. Written on the bag were the words “Cash vaults.”

Then she opened one of these smaller bags open and couldn’t believe her eyes.

The bag was filled with crisp $100 bills. So Emily opened another bag. Once again, the bag was brimming with $100 bills.

When Emily told the rest of her family, they were amazed. But soon, they felt as if they should return the cash to its rightful owners.

So they drove again to the police headquarters and without a second thought, they handed over all of the money.

“You do the right thing and return it, because it doesn’t belong to us.” – Emily Schantz.

The police informed the local post office depot that someone had handed over $1 million that they had misplaced.

The post office representatives were grateful but confused as to how the money had ended up on the side of the road.

Many community leaders have praised the Schantz family for doing the right thing. Others have said that they deserve a financial reward for what they did. It remains to be seen if they will get one.

Soon, a local news team made a report on this story.

A YouTube upload of the report has gained over 20,000 views in just a matter of days. It also has dozens of likes and over 100 comments.

People are divided. Some have said that the family did the right thing:

Others have called the family completely stupid:

So was the family doing the right thing, or displaying complete “stupindty”?

Many people seem to be assuming that the money belonged to the US Post Office, meaning that taking it would have been a victimless crime. But that may not necessarily be the case.

Many people who have called the family stupid seem to be working on the assumption that money equals happiness.

Of course, people need a certain amount of money to have a comfortable lifestyle. But $1 million of stolen income? Perhaps the family would have always felt guilty? Perhaps they were happy with the money that they had actually earned?

Anyone who works hard knows the satisfaction that comes with earning a paycheck. The Schantz family members seem like those kinds of people.
