Farmer cracks open a giant egg only to find something unusual inside

A man who describes himself as “just an old Texas farmer appreciating nature” runs an interesting YouTube channel dedicated to animals and nature.

He goes by the username ashmorerv and has already garnered 16K subscribers.

We were drawn to this channel because of the stunning portrayal of everyday life on the farm. However, one video is particularly interesting.

The farmer decided to film the process of cracking open a large egg.

The egg is gigantic. Moreover, it’s what’s inside of the egg that counts as a surprise.

According to the video description, a 7-month-old healthy, normal-sized chicken has been laying giant eggs for a while.

Don’t worry, the man clarifies that the process seems to be harmless for the chicken. She lays an egg like this a couple of times a week and acts completely normal afterward. After it happened more than once, the farmer decided to film it, and the unusual egg attracted more than 12 million YouTube views.

Who would have thought poultry could have such a strong x-factor for becoming famous?!

The video shows a complete process of cracking open the typical egg.

You can see a man holding the egg in his left hand, and it’s clear that the egg is much bigger than you’d expect. Take a look at his palm; a common-size egg would fit inside the hand. This one doesn’t.

Anyway, ashmorerv cracks the egg open, and you see a yolk and another egg inside. When he cracks open the other egg as well, another yolk appears.

“Both yolks taste the same,” explains the fortunate Texan.

As expected, people went creative with their comments, and one user wrote:” What if the last egg had another egg in it. Then it kept getting smaller, and the smallest one had a tiny chick in it.”

As intriguing as the idea might seem at first, we have to burst the bubble and explain what’s behind the strange egg.

Though relatively rare, the phenomenon of laying an egg inside of an egg is called a counter-peristalsis contraction. Yes, the chicken egg production is actually ovulation.

Typically, the hen releases the ovum (from her left ovary into the oviduct) that becomes the yolk of an egg. It happens every 18-26 hours. The ovum then travels through the oviduct organ, adding layers of the egg along the way. Remember, before the hen lays another ovum, the previous one must complete its travel through the oviduct.

If that doesn’t happen, then a situation like this might occur. When a hen releases the second ovum before the other one had been laid, you get an egg-like the one in the video.

Amazingly, the same thing happened to numerous other farmers.

Eton farmer Deb McLucas found the same egg with the surprise inside. Mrs. McLucas explained it in much simpler words: “Without getting scientific about it, the hen is still practicing and didn’t get that one right.” Interestingly, young hens have minor troubles with their hormonal systems.

“They’re still getting the hang of producing the egg and knowing exactly when to put that shell around,” says McLucas.

Did you know that the size of the egg depends on the age of the hen?

Studies have confirmed it: older hens produce larger eggs. Another strange fact is that you can look at the chicken earlobes to predict what color egg they will lay.

Yes, chickens have earlobes.

How about the fact that eggs contain the highest quality protein you can buy?

We bet that you’ll be a bit more fascinated next time you make an omelet and think of this article.
