The love of a child sees no difference between one person or another. This outlook also seems to extend to the animals around them.

Children see the world, not through a lens of pre-judged conceptions, but as it is and how it applies to them. It is this quality that endears them to so many around them.

The power of love

In almost all cases the love of a child is pure. The following story has a sweet and heartwarming message and has inspired others with its simple message — love one another and be kind.

Puppies for sale

The story starts at a farm where a farmer is selling a few puppies from his dog’s new litter. A young boy approached the farmer, keen on purchasing one of the little balls of fur.

While showing the puppies available, the farmer is surprised by the boy’s actions.

The boy had shown up in response to the sign advertising that the farmer had four puppies for sale. As the farmer drove the last nail into the sign at the edge of his yard, he felt a tug from behind. Looking around, he was surprised to see a small boy standing behind him.

“Mister,” the boy said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

The runt of the litter

Shaking his head, the farmer explained to the boy the high pedigree of the puppies and as such, they weren’t exactly cheap. The boy thought for a moment and then reached deep into his pocket, pulling out a handful of change.

“I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?” the boy said.

The farmer reassured the boy that it was enough and called out his dog and her litter of pups. Soon, four little balls of fur followed their mother into the yard. For his part, the little boy couldn’t help but beam with excitement.

Then the boy noticed something else, another little ball following his family into the yard, albeit more slowly. This puppy hobbled along, trying to keep up with its mom and siblings.

“I want that one,” the little boy said to the farmer, pointing to the runt.

The reason behind his choice

Kneeling at the boy’s side, the farmer tried to explain that he didn’t want that particular puppy. The puppy would never be able to play with the boy as the other dogs would.

Stepping back, the boy rolled up the sleeve of his pants, the sun gleaming off of the steel brace running down both sides of his leg.

Looking up at the farmer, the little boy spoke. “You see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”

Reaching down, the farmer picked up the little puppy. With tears in his eyes, the farmer carefully handed the little runt to the boy.

“How much is he?” the little boy asked.

No charge for love

“There’s no charge,” the farmer answered back. “There is no charge for love.”
