“Overachieving” sheepdog invites whole herd of sheep over for morning breakfast
As a dog owner, you can teach your dog how to do a variety of things. Some dog breeds are specially bred for the tasks that they have performed for ages.
In one case, a sheep dog’s training led to him having a little surprise for his owner one morning at breakfast.
Rocky is a little too good at his job
Rosalyn Edwards is a farmer in Devon, England. There she lives with her family and the family pet, Rocky. Rocky, a seven-month-old border collie, helps out around the farm, especially with the herd of sheep the family owns.
But Edwards had no idea what the adorable sheep dog had in store for her.
Edwards gets the shock of her life
One morning, while Edwards was working in the kitchen, she started to hear some strange noises. Unbeknownst to her, Rocky had herded the family sheep straight into the kitchen. It seemed Edwards’ husband and son had left the gate open to the sheep pen and things escalated from there.
As Edwards turned around, she got the shock of her life, a kitchen full of sheep, nine in total. Rocky, who was still learning the ropes at his new job, had inadvertently led them inside where they filled up the tiny room.
“I thought it was funny at the time, but then there was quite a lot of wee, poo and mud everywhere,” Edwards told The Telegraph. “It took me a little while to clean it all up.”
The role of border collies
Border collies have been bred for over 200 years to herd various types of animals, mainly sheep. This herding instinct comes from their ancestors, wolves. Instead of killing their prey like a wolf, a border collie has been specifically bred not to kill, but to round up and encircle.
This serves them well in their job as a herding dog. This herding instinct is innate, so if you decide to get a border collie, keep that in mind, especially if you have children, as the dogs tend to snap and bite as they herd. Fortunately, you can refocus that instinct into something else with training.
In some cases, a border collie left to its own devices can get destructive around the home. They require several hours of physical and mental exercise per day to avoid this. This makes them a great pet for high-energy owners.
Edwards posts the video of the incident on Facebook
While this situation was pretty funny, Rocky was just doing his job, maybe a little too well. Taking her other children into the other room, Edwards and her husband were able to guide the sheep outside and back to their enclosure. She caught the whole incident on video, which she posted to her Facebook page.
As for Rocky, he seemed quite pleased with himself for his efforts.
“He brought a whole new meaning to ‘bringing the sheep home,’” Edwards said on Facebook.
