Family adopt a super fat cat – after his weight-loss journey, take a look at him now!
There’s just something so adorable and likable about fatter cats, but this one certainly takes it up a notch! Meet Bronson, which is probably the biggest cat that the two lovebirds Mike Wilson and Megan Hanneman have ever seen in their lives.
The couple decided that they wanted to have an additional family member in the home, and they visited the Humane Society of West Michigan to find a lovely feline four-footer.
At first, they actually wanted to adopt a young kitten, but Bronson quickly managed to change their minds. From the very first moment they laid eyes on the big furball and his massive heart, they simply fell in love and wanted to take him home right away.
“When we first saw him, we were shocked at how big he was,” Mike said to The Dodo. “Neither of us had seen a cat that size before and we thought he was so cute and cuddly, like a large stuffed animal! We immediately went over to gaze at him from outside his room.”
Unfortunately, Mike and Megan weren’t able to bring Bronson home with them that same day, as they had to leave for work and didn’t have time for the necessary paperwork.
“On the way to work, we were talking about him nonstop and started regretting not sticking around for him,” Wilson added.
They started to get worried that someone would adopt Bronson before they had a chance themselves, so they returned as soon as they could the following day.
Luckily, Bronson was right there waiting for them!
“We started feeling like he would be adopted in no time because of how quickly we were drawn to him. We returned right when they opened the following day and were so happy to see him again!”
They also learned more about Bronson and how he got at the shelter in the first place. Bronson’s previous owner passed away and he was always known as “Fat Kat”. Mike and Megan also learned that he wasn’t particularly social with other cats and preferred to keep to himself, but that wasn’t really an issue for the couple as they figured he’d open up after a while.
“The staff changed his name once they brought him in. But his naming kind of sheds light on how seriously they were taking his obesity,” Wilson said. “Their best guess was that he was fed either too much kibble or was being fed table scraps.”
Bronson’s weight is a problem for his health, and the staff is assisting the couple to make sure he loses weight at a healthy rate.
His excessive weight means that he’s much more vulnerable to heart diseases, diabetes, and even cancer. Bronson will now go through diet and exercise to make sure he’s healthy again. The cat also needs to be brushed every day, as Bronson can’t do it himself due to his weight. Luckily, Mike and Meghan wanted nothing less than to properly take care of Bronson.
“He was quite unkempt and had a lot of dander in his hair, mostly due to him not being able to groom himself because of his size,” Mike told. “I just wanted to take him home, clean him up and care for him.”
Bronson absolutely loves his new forever home and is doing much better than before. He’s even opened up to his cat siblings!
“When we first brought him home, he kind of did his own thing throughout the day and stayed in our bedroom,” Mike said. “Nowadays, he is waiting for us by the door with our other cats when we get home, he runs out to the kitchen if he hears a ruckus of cans opening and hangs out with the other cats in the living room in the daytime. He is actually a really social kitty.”
No matter how much weight Bronson loses, he’ll always have a gigantic heart. He’s already lost twelve pounds, and you can follow his adventures on his official Instagram account.
