Dad defends letting his infant nap with pit bull

Los Angeles based Jarad Derochey is a breeder of American Bullies, XL-XXL dogs and puppies, which are a type of Pit Bull. A debate was created after he had posted some photos and videos on his @mvp_bullies account on Instagram, where his very young children were seen, cuddling and playing with their rather big family Bully dogs.

His posts have raised quite the stir as people questioned the safety of the children to be left alone and at such a close proximity with the massive dogs. The issue comes from the fact that Pit Bulls are commonly known for their aggressive behavior and their involvement in blood sports and dog fights. Also, there were quite a few unfortunate incidents in the past involving big family dogs, such a Pit Bulls and young children.

However, by looking at the pictures and the videos that Jarad has shared, we can hardly relate these huge “teddy-bears” to aggressive dogs with barbaric instincts. Generally, as we can read in the mpvkennel site, American Bullies usually have around 6.25% pitbull in their DNA and “are primarily a hybrid of Mastiff and Bulldog refined of dozens of generations to become their own thing”.

Bully dogs are bred to be companion dogs and in a loving household where they are given the proper attention and training they can be loving and protective with the family members, particularly with young children with whom their protective instincts kick in. And, this is obviously the case in the Derochey household where their bully dogs act as “nannies” and friends for their children.

Derochey on his site also defends the Pit Bull breed by saying “Pits Bulls are fast, eager and extremely intelligent. They are admired for their agility and obedience. Activities like guarding herds or watching over your property suit the Pit Bulls. Their aggressiveness is misunderstood and overrated. Rather, they can be a welcome member of your family with their people-oriented and friendly nature”.

On the photos and videos post on Instagram we can see their one-year-old baby, Cruise, safely cuddled by their family bully dog who hugs and kisses the baby with such an affectionate way that would melt your heart.

On another short video, we can see Jarad’s young daughter comfortably chilling against their dog while listening to music. They both look so relaxed and happy together, like two good friends.

However, apart from Jarad defending his decision to leave his children with their Bully dogs, many people on YouTube rashed to support him. One wrote, “I would feel safer letting my kid play with the dog I raised myself than with the kids raised by other people”, while another exclaimed, “Pit bulls aren’t aggressive dogs unless they’re taught to be. So tired of hearing negative things about them when they’re an amazing pet to have. So lovable and cute!”.

In my personal experience as a past dog owner, animals and particularly dogs are the product of their environment. If you are loving and caring then you have a friend for life.
