The fawn had only been in the world for a few weeks, when she got separated from her mom. Luckily, Iris the German Shepherd kept her safe.
It all began when Adrian Flores was taking Iris, his seven-month-old German Shepherd, on a walk.
They had walked down the same trail in Southern Pines, North Carolina ever since Adrian had taken the puppy in. But that morning, something strange happened.
A baby deer started following Adrian and Iris.
At first, Adrian assumed that the fawn was just curious and would run back to her mother shortly. But the fawn kept on following.
Eventually, the fawn ran right up to Adrian and Iris. The fawn was most interested in Iris.
Iris, being kind-hearted and still technically a puppy herself, acted warmly to the fawn. She gave the baby deer a cuddle. Then she started licking the baby clean.
At first, the fawn was distressed. But as Iris comforted her, she calmed down noticeably.
Iris looked at the fawn lovingly. Clearly, the two had formed a close bond already.
Just when Adrian was planning on making his home fawn friendly, there came a rustling in the bushes. The mother deer peered out.
The baby deer recognized her mother and ran straight at her. Soon, the two were reunited.
Iris did an incredible job of looking after the fawn.
If it weren’t for her, who knows if the baby deer would have been able to find her mother? Instead, she might have kept on wandering, inadvertently getting further and further from her mom.
Luckily, Adrian filmed Iris comforting the baby deer.
The footage then appeared on YouTube, where it has made many people happy. To date, the video has gained over 40,000 views. It also has almost 200 likes and a range of supportive comments. People have been saying things like this:
Adrian has clearly done an incredible job of raising Iris.
But just because Iris was kind to a baby deer does not mean that dogs and deer always get along.
Because dogs are descended from wolves, they can sometimes act in a predatory manner toward deer.
Many dogs like to chase deer when they see them. And this isn’t just a dangerous situation for deer.
Dogs are also in danger when they chase deer. According to University of Florida Health, “When deer feel threatened, they can strike back with their considerable strength and sharp hooves.” Naturally, this can cause significant damage to a dog.
So always be cautious with your dog around deer.
Never let them chase deer, and never let them get too close. Iris was well trained and the kind of dog that wanted to nurture the fawn when she saw her. But the same cannot be said of every dog.
Yes, the baby deer was small and harmless. But if the baby’s mother had thought that her baby was threatened, then she may have harmed Iris.
So don’t try to repeat what Iris did with the fawn. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
