Fed up Burger King staff announces they quit on giant storefront sign

Working in the food industry isn’t for the weak. The hours are sometimes longer, you encounter so many different people throughout your shift (we’re talking rude customers who make impossible demands), the pay isn’t always that good, burnout is real, and management just doesn’t seem to care much for your welfare.

Take it from the staff of a Burger King in Lincoln, Nebraska.

On their last day of work, they changed the restaurant sign to, “We all quit. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Some people must have thought it was a stunt pulled just for laughs – and they were right, sort of. It was done to “get a big laugh at the employer’s expense.”

Rachel Flores, store general manager, explained that what triggered their decision to quit were poor working conditions. Apparently, temperatures in the kitchen reached the mid-30s C range. The heat was too much that she even ended up being hospitalized for dehydration.

Unfortunately, her boss called her a “baby” after it happened.

“When I was two minutes late, my boss called me and when I told him what was going on, he told me I was being a baby and I was making excuses and that I needed to do my job.”

Not only that, the restaurant also had understaffing issues. With poor maintenance and understaffing issues, it comes as no surprise that the disgruntled employees decided they had had enough. On a Facebook post acknowledging the mass resignation, Rachel wrote,

“We quit because upper management was a joke and had no care for me or my employees. I put in my 2 weeks and so did MANY other people.”

After the sign went up, it didn’t take long for the news to reach their boss.

He then phoned her and demanded that the sign be taken down immediately.

The fed-up store general manager responded by telling him that wasn’t possible since the lunch crowd was already filling up the restaurant, and that they were short-staffed.

Rachel’s boss showed up and fired her on the spot.

After doing so, he had the message on the sign changed to “Now hiring. Flexible schedules.”

The employer’s response to the team’s dissatisfaction with their working conditions was nothing short of appalling. Surely, it could have been handled better. Instead, he chose to be dismissive of their concerns. C

onsequently, he made it easy for the employees to make their decision. Following the news of the sign, the fast-food restaurant’s head office promptly addressed the situation with a statement saying,

“The work experience described at this location is not in line with our brand values. Our franchisee is looking into this situation to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.”

A good boss always knows what actions to take in the event that unbearable conditions begin to surface in the workplace, no matter how challenging. Moreover, he acknowledges employees’ concerns through proper communication.

Hopefully, the incident that took place in Burger King will serve as a reminder to all employers and employees about the value of a good working environment and the important role of healthy team dynamics in the workplace.
