Doorbell camera catches FedEx driver’s patriotic act

It was a blustery day in February of 2020 when Rick Guerino Jr. saw a FedEx deliveryman approach his door via his doorbell camera.

“I just saw a FedEx guy coming up my driveway, and I didn’t know why, because I wasn’t getting a package,” he told CBS News.

What he saw was a random act of kindness that would go viral on Facebook.

A feel-good moment

The clip, which has now been viewed over 383,000 times on Guerino’s Facebook page caught the attention of local and national media as well. But it captured a simple act.

FedEx driver Chris Oslovitch was driving by when he saw that the Freehold, New Jersey home’s flag had fallen down. If you’ve been trained in how to handle the United States flag, you know it’s never supposed to touch the ground.

Oslovitch pulled over, got out of his truck, and tended to the flag, triggering the doorbell camera in the meantime.

Patriotic instinct

The driver said he acted on instinct, adding that stopping to pick it up off the ground was “the respectful thing to do”, adding:

“When you see something like that, you know, you can’t just drive past it and ignore it. It’s something that just caught my eye and I had to do something about it.”

But he did so much more than simply pick up the flag. He meticulously folded it, military-style.

“I was in awe, in a way, that someone would respect the flag that much,” Guerino Jr. said. “I hope (people) understand what he was trying to do. It’s something America should see.”

Going above and beyond

For Oslovitch, the flag is more than just a symbol of the U.S. It has a special meaning for him and his family. His father was an officer for the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years – and he had been one of the first responders on the scene after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Oslovich told CBS2 New York he learned to formally fold the flag from his father, who has since died from cancer. The 32-year-old has also applied to be an officer.

Spreading positivity

After it went viral, news stations tracked down the FedEx driver, and he was happy to share his story and hear that his gesture had been warmly received. But he doesn’t want the attention to be on him.

“I’m happy to see the story is spreading such a positive message. It’s not about the recognition, just doing what’s right,” Oslovich told NJ Advance Media.

The patriotic driver and homeowner were planning to meet face-to-face for dinner after all the media attention.

A statement of appreciation

According to NJ.com, FedEx released a statement praising the employee.

“FedEx Ground is proud of the many contributions our team members make to our communities every day,” FedEx said in a statement. “We commend the actions of this service provider employee, who went above and beyond by carefully and respectfully securing the flag on the homeowner’s behalf.”
