Feline escape artist, Quilty, shoots to social media fame when shelter chronicles his exploits
This is Quilty. He became famous via the Friends for Life animal shelter in Houston, Texas after they highlighted some of his criminal behavior on social media.
Worrying about his bad influence spreading to the shelter’s other cats, Quilty has been sent to solitary confinement more than once to think about what he’d done.
But, “solitary,” in this case just means the shelter’s lobby. And Quilty was sent there for encouraging and helping his feline brethren escape the confines of the senior cat room.
In fact, he led jailbreaks “several times a day.”
After his stint in solitary/the lobby, the shelter had to install more security measures to prevent the inmates from breaking out – so they Quilty-proofed the room.
Then, the cat was “re-acclimated” to the space by being placed in an “integration kennel” in the hopes that he would see the futility of any future efforts and the supremacy of his human guards who referred to him as “a spicy a-hole.”
The indignity.
But being a master escape artist, Quilty escaped that kennel as well. It was then back to solitary for the feline felon. He appeared to be impossible to rehabilitate.
No one keeps Quilty behind a closed door. In fact, his previous owners said he frequently opened doors to let his canine partner in crime into the house.
It appears that the cat is not content to be confined to anything at all. Freedom is all Quilty wants. However, his attempts to escape through windows were unsuccessful. But he did manage to stick it to his human captors by getting into one of their staff meetings. Still, he maintains his innocence.
Quilty isn’t trying to break out of the facility altogether, he simply walks down the hall once he’s out of his room and struts down the hallway – just to prove to humans that he can.
And while the shelter clearly loves him, they quickly got fed up with the behavior of their most high-maintenance inmate.
Here is footage from Quilty’s perp-walk.
You may have heard of Quilty (aka “Spicy A-Hole”) after he shot to fame on social media after his captors at the shelter shared his story. They even created a Free Quilty Instagram account (which now has over 51k followers!) and “Free Quilty” merchandise.
Endorsement deals with Bissel and Arm & Hammer soon followed and Quilty frequently posted parts of his freedom manifesto to Instagram to inspire his followers and potential copycat criminals using the tag #QuiltyNotGuilty.
“It’s a new day. A new day to dream of freedom. A new day to yearn and strive for what is beyond (this door).
I will never give up. I will never surrender. I will never fall into the seductive lull of mediocrity and compliance. Despite the Temptations and siren’s song of giving up this battle, I will persevere.
Hold fast, my army. You stand sentry over this revolution.”
Finally, Quilty was released to a family willing to put up with his criminal behavior. He happily (and spicily) shared the news on his Instagram page:
“Here’s the family I chose (note their bitchin’ blazers). I’m pretty freakin’ happy here, to tell you the truth. I haven’t even thought yet about potential escape routes so… I guess these guys aren’t knobs.”
Now, Quilty devotes his social media account to securing freedom for his friends, inmates like Bolitos who haven’t had a single adoption inquiry.
Quilty has also set up a second Instagram account devoted to his new home life, which he promised to “update occasionally…whenever I feel like it.”
