When the firefighters took in baby Naomi, they knew that they had to look out for her.
It all began when a young mother rang the doorbell of the Santa Ana Fire Station. She was making a heart-wrenching decision.
The baby in her arms was just hours old. She knew that she could not give the baby a happy life. So she had decided to give it up.
Chief Daryll Milliot answered the door and was saddened at what he saw.
The fire station is a safe surrender site for mothers to anonymously give up unwanted children. But until now, no mother had given a baby up at the station.
Milliot took the six-pound baby in his arms and grasped her tightly. The mother thanked the fire chief and left, crying.
“When she physically went to give Naomi to me, there was a moment where she had a difficult time doing it. She balked a couple of times and just wanted a few more moments to hold her.” – Fire Chief Daryll Milliot.
That night, Milliot and the other firefighters kept baby safe until they could get her into a foster home.
The firefighters were all tough guys. But their hearts melted in the presence of an adorable baby. In fact, when Child Protective Services came in the morning, every firefighter was heartbroken to see her go. Milliot asked if they could be kept abreast of the child’s journey. The Child Protective Services officer was a little puzzled by the question, but they said that they would try.
Luckily, the firefighters were all kept in the loop. In fact, in eight months’ time, the CPS officer told them the good news that the baby was being adopted. All of the firefighters attended the adoption ceremony and met Naomi’s new parents.
“It’s one of the highlights of my career by far, to go in to that ceremony and getting to see her again.” – Michael DeLeon.
Since that ceremony, Naomi’s parents have often taken their daughter to meet the firefighters who looked out for her on the first night of her life.
In many ways, they are now members of Naomi’s family. They are sure to look out for her as she grows older.
Krysten and Kurt Snyder knew that they wanted to adopt Naomi the second that they met her. She went straight to them from the fire station. At first, they were fostering her, but they immediately knew that they wanted her to be their daughter.
Naomi is undoubtedly in a loving home. Krysten and Kurt also have an older adopted child, Judah, although he is less than a year older than her.
The parents plan to tell Naomi the truth about her birth as soon as she is old enough to understand. They will also let her know that the firefighters who initially took her in all care for and love her.
A news report of this story then made its way onto YouTube, where it soon went viral.
To date, it has managed to gain over 1.7 million views. It also has more than 16,000 likes and 2,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Naomi is very lucky to have been taken to the firefighters. Clearly, they made a special connection with her.
