Firefighters use the “Jaws of Life” to save stray kitten’s life
It often happens that stray animals find themselves in hazardous situations only because they are looking for something to eat or seeking shelter. In some cases, they might even lose their lives in this search for food or warmth and safety.
In the video that follows we can see a kitten that found itself in a very uncomfortable situation to say the least. More specifically, it had its head stuck in a piston and it couldn’t get it out.
Luckily, a man saw the little stray and decided to help it, so he took it to the nearest fire station. The firefighters’ hearts just broke at the sight of the poor little feline that was in such a difficult and dangerous situation. So, they immediately started thinking of ways to help it.
Initially, they placed it on the floor and tried to calm it down. They had no idea if it had been stuck there for just some hours or even maybe a couple of days.
“She was skinny,” the firefighters told The Dodo, “it had probably been while she had eaten. I think [she pretty quickly] realized: ‘Hey, these people are here to help me!'”
So, in order to help their little fellow, they had to think outside the box, as they said. Even though they receive tons of calls every day, this was a first at their station. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of them.
First, they decided to try to break it with a 3-pound sledgehammer and a hardened steel punch.
They tried to crack the piston a few times but to no avail. Then, they thought it might be a good idea to try the reciprocating saw. This would mean stuff would go into the kitty’s eyes, so they tried to prevent this from happening by covering her eyes and ears with a glove.
When they start going in the piston with the saw, the kitten begins to tremble. The saw makes a loud noise and the poor animal is scared. The firefighters didn’t want to hurt her hearing at all, so when they realized it was practically impossible to break the piston with the saw, they stopped.
Now, there was one last chance: the Jaws of Life. Usually, during emergencies, the Jaws of Life are called forth to help remove victims from crashed vehicles. They are also used to extricate victims from collapsed concrete and steel structures after earthquakes.
In this case, the tool was used to break the piston and free the kitty. And it worked. Firefighters were extra careful when using it because the situation called for delicate handling, and a few moments later, the cat was finally free!
The firefighters gave her a bath and, after a three-hour nap, she was as good as new! A photo of the beautiful kitty, now named Loco, was then posted on Facebook, and they soon got a call from someone who wanted to adopt her.
Now Loco is living in her new home and, every once in a while, the firefighters who saved her life visit her to check on her!
