The moment when you get to see the two lines on your pregnancy test, or you get to read the “pregnant” answer on it, you feel like the happiest and luckiest person in the world- or do you?

Obviously, a pregnancy is not what every woman is praying for.

And, while there are many women who wish to get pregnant or to adopt a baby, there are others who, for various socio-economical or health reasons, cannot assume the responsibility of a baby.

Luckily, in the US there is this Safely Surrendered Baby program for newborns that aims at giving those unwanted babies a chance to live.

This program is also going on in Orange County, California, where mothers or anyone with legal custody of the baby can surrender it in hospitals or Fire Stations provided that there is a “safe surrender” sign.

This can be done within the first three days of the baby’s life.

And that’s what a young woman did in March 2015.

The young mother, who, according to the officer who met her, must have been in her 20s, felt she had no other choice but to surrender her newborn baby at an Orange County Fire Station.

“I opened the door and the first words out of her mouth were, ‘I need to give you my baby,'” Captain Daryll Milliot said.

While the woman was there to surrender her baby, she hesitated for some time before handing her newborn daughter to the firefighter.

Eventually, she put her in his arms and left.

The firefighter was shocked, as this was the first baby ever surrendered to a fire station in Orange County.

Milliot took the newborn inside and took care of her, along with his fellow firemen, Michael de Leon, Tyler Green, and Shawn Stacy. They followed the protocol for such situations and called the social worker who was soon on her way to the Fire Station.

In the meantime, the men totally fell in love with the baby!

They played with her and let her play with their badges to calm her down, while they declared themselves her unofficial uncles.

Not only that, but they also gave her a name: Naomi.

When the social worker took the baby from the firemen, they knew exactly who to call.

There was a couple who had already adopted a little boy and were looking to grow their family, so that’s who they called.

“[The social worker said] there was a little girl that was a Safe Surrender, and that we needed to pick her up from the hospital in a couple of hours,” Krysten and Kurt Snyder said.

Eventually, the couple officially adopted the baby girl in November that same year, and they were excited about this decision of theirs and how things turned out for their family.

“It really is a great opportunity for us to tell her about her mom, and what a courageous thing she did,” Krysten said, explaining they are going to tell Naomi about her mom and how she finally got to them.

After the adoption ceremony, which the firefighters that initially took Naomi in attended, the girl’s new parents took her back to the Fire Station so that her “uncles” could see her and spend some time with her. They are, in a way, part of the family now!

We are glad this little girl found a loving couple to call mom and dad, and we are sure her uncles will always be by her side, too!
