Onlookers see dog trapped in frozen lake and firefighters risk their lives to save him
No one knows how Charlie got onto the ice or how long he was on it before he fell. Nor do they know how long he was in the water before being rescued.
They only know that he was in a life or death situation when he was found.
The situation was so dire that they weren’t sure that Charlie would live, even after he was saved. Charlie seemed to be in total shock as he held onto the side of a hole in the middle of some icy waters.
He just floated there very still and very calmly. Maybe he knew that this was the best thing for him to do until rescuers arrived.
The Theresa Fire Department’s rescue of Charlie was caught on video.
Time was running out for Charlie when the fire department arrived.
Thankfully, they didn’t waste any time trying to free Charlie from the frozen water. The rescue began when a firefighter named Jeff, dressed in red protective gear, walked out onto the ice.
He had a rope wrapped around his waist so his fellow firefighters could reel him in when he finally got hold of Charlie.
Jeff also had what looked like a pool noodle wrapped around his waist.
He carried a second one to wrap around Charlie. Jeff dropped to his knees on the ice, then got on his belly and crawled over the ice slowly toward Charlie.
He was just about to lower himself into the icy water.
That’s when Charlie started howling and crying.
The closer Jeff got, the louder Charlie would cry.
The poor thing was so cold and weak and scared. The cold water could have also been causing him immense pain.
Jeff was waist-deep in the frigid waters when he reached Charlie.
Charlie looked really happy to see him. Jeff picked Charlie up and then placed him onto the ice.
But Charlie seemed too weak to move on.
That’s when the firefighters on land reeled Jeff and Charlie in.
Another firefighter shouted to bring over some blankets.
They immediately covered Charlie and tried to get him water.
They told him to “hang in there” and tried to be gentle and comforting to him.
They rubbed Charlie to get him dry and warm but he stopped breathing for a moment. They talked to Charlie and begged him to “stay with me.”
They refused to give up on Charlie and kept working on him until he started breathing again and had a heartbeat. Thankfully, they were able to make sure that Charlie was safe.
“Thanks to the rescuer(s) who put themselves in harm’s way to save this nice dog. True heroes in my opinion,” wrote one YouTube commenter.
Charlie was eventually adopted into a forever home with his own doggo siblings. But his firefighter pals come by once in a while and Charlie always makes sure to let them know how grateful he is for them. Charlie even has a rescue named after him.
