The main attraction of Ashikaga Park is the “Great Miracle Wisteria.”
It looks so majestic that it’s almost hard to believe it’s been there for over 150 years. It is also considered to be Japan’s oldest living wisteria.
It is the largest in the country, but not the largest in the world. That is held by a wisteria tree in Sierra Madre, California, and is approximately 4,000 square meters in size.

Although they are referred to as “trees” and can resemble them, wisterias are actually vines.
Because they can grow to be quite heavy, caretakers built beams to support the weight of its branches and keep it upright. This arrangement created a lovely flower umbrella that dangles and sways in the wind.
Visitors can walk beneath the canopy and enjoy the pinkish-purple light cast by the blooms. Thanks to the overhanging vines!

During the Great Wisteria Festival, which takes place from April to May, the park’s magnificent trees are illuminated.
In 2016, Ashikaga Park has named the most beautiful night view in Japan.

During this time, it blooms with fragrant purple blossoms that fill the park.
The park is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours during peak blooming months. Visitors can get there in two hours by public transportation from central Tokyo.

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Oyama. To get to Tomita Station, take the Ryomo Line west. It will take 5 to 10 minutes to walk to the park from there.
It’s especially crowded during the festival, so it is advised that visitors arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
