These gorgeous flowers are the color of red velvet cake and smell like it too
We love flowers for two reasons: The way they look and the way they smell. Anyone who’s been to a well-tended garden knows this. Sensory interaction can really get the serotonin in your brain going, and a pretty flower that’s nice-smelling is hard not to like.
But a flower that smells like a favorite sweet? Now that’s something else.
Imagine if someone imparted to you about flowers that smell like chocolate. Sounds a bit too good to be true, right? You can’t have your cake and smell it too.
Though they’d be right!
Let me introduce you to the Chocolate Cosmos. These deep red works of art smell as pretty as they look. You might have seen Cosmos before – most likely in shades of purple or yellow. Cosmos is a pretty species-diverse flowering plant, and plenty of species means plenty of colors!
Chocolate and flowers have always been the go-to pair for romance. That makes a chocolate-smelling flower pretty convenient, doesn’t it?
Just don’t eat it, obviously.
Chocolate Cosmos, also known by their scientific name Cosmos atrosanguineus, are a gorgeous deep reddish-brown and a black chocolatey secondary color. Their notably chocolatey scent, as their namesake mentions, would be fantastic in a garden.
Cosmos atrosanguineus was actually thought to be extinct in the wild, which would be pretty unfortunate. The good news was that they aren’t.
I can see it now. Gorgeous garden, colors everywhere, and the faint smell of chocolate to top things off. That sounds like a pretty great idea for a garden, doesn’t it?
So I guess the next important question is “How do I grow them?”
Well it’s not so simple since their seeds are sterile. You need to use their roots to propagate them, something that sets them apart from other species in the genus Cosmos.
You’d best give them the best kind of soil – hydrated and fertile, particularly. For sun, you’re looking at about 6 hours of sunlight. Like with most plants, don’t overdo the exposure to the sun.
The heat is always bad in excess for plants, and you wouldn’t want that happening to these chocolate-scented beauties.
Don’t overdo the watering. Chocolate cosmos are best watered with moderation, and once a week is enough for these flowers.
Similar to other Cosmo species, the Chocolate variety can be grown in a container. Just don’t forget to bring them inside when it gets too cold, like during the winter. These chocolates aren’t meant to be kept cold!
But when you do it right, it’ll be super rewarding. Chocolate-scent flowers aren’t common in every garden, and every person who walks past yours will think you’ve got something baking.
Of course, there’s one problem this makes: You might get constant cravings for chocolate.
You do deserve nice things, though, don’t you? In fact, now that I’ve brought this up, I wonder if these flowers are toxic to dogs too.
Has this made you want to start your own chocolate-scented garden? Or was it just cool to read about? Whatever it was, please share the article too!
