Football player kneels with opponent to pray, showing compassion for his mom battling cancer
Football is c0mpetitive, but it also brings people together in a very special way.
A recent photo of two Texan football players kneeling on a football field and praying has recently gone viral. The photo shows Gage Smith of Sherman, Texas praying with Ty Jordan of West Mesquite.
Jordan’s mother was diagnosed with stage four lung and bone cancer and his family was going through a very difficult time. Thankfully, the player had the support of his family and teammates to help him through this turbulent time.
Surprisingly, the highschooler also had the support of his opponents.
The two players met a few years ago playing 7-on-7 football on a select team over the spring and summer. This was their first game as opponents. It would have been easy to let the competitive nature of the sport interfere with their friendship but Smith wanted to let Jordan know that he was still giving him all the support he could need.
After the game, Smith walked up to Jordan, shook his hand and kneeled down on the field to pray for his friend’s mother. The moment was captured on camera by a coach’s wife. It didn’t take long for the heartwarming photos to go viral
I was sent these pics last night and was going to make a long post but I'm gonna keep it short.
Be careful how you treat people because you just might be entertaining an angel!! #GageSmith thanks for praying and speaking LIFE into my nephew, Ty Jordan, you are blessed & amazing. pic.twitter.com/uUHubqRR5c— Takka Jordan (@Takka_Jordan) November 2, 2019
“Football brings people together in so many dofferent ways, and that was just one example of it that night.”

Smith explained that the moment he had no idea this moment would go viral. He says that the moment was meant for Jordan and his family, not for public recognition or fame.
Sherman High School coach Martines weighed in saying that he has nothing but respect for his student. He said that Smith was an excellent character and always has been.
“He’s a true leader and he has compassion and it followed through for a lot of the guys on the team. It’s pretty special that kind of everybody gets to see really what he is, he’s that type of kid all the time, it’s not just infront of the cameras or anything like that, he’s like that every day.”
The internet has shown immense appreciation for the show of sportsmanship.
The responses to Takka Jordan’s tweet shows how impressed people are with the two high schoolers.
“I know neither of you. I’m in Kentucky and not even a sports fan. But somone shared this on Facebook earlier and it really touched me. I shared it even. We could all learn a lesson from these two fine young men. Everyone is in my prayers.”
Another response reaffirms the humility of Gage Smith
“You’re an amazing kid Gage! We know you’re humble and didn’t expect that to go viral. I have 2 sons and I admore what kind of young man you are. As for Mrs. Jordan, we will all be praying for her now. God bless you all and have a great rest of the season.”
Gage Smith answered this reply with a simple “Thank you ma’am!” showing us all how respectful the young man is.
