Try not to laugh as these two rescue foxes chatter and giggle away during playtime

Dixie and Muttais are two foxes who live on a rescue farm in Minnesota where Save-A-Fox operates. The foxes there have been rejected by their mothers or are otherwise disabled in some way and would have been left to die alone if not for the intervention of founder and rescuer Mikayla Raines.

Now they’re free to live and play in safety.

Save-A-Fox’s rescue Dixie (also known as Dixiedo) has been in the news before when a video of her stealing Raines’ phone and running away to bury it – all while “giggling” hysterically – went viral.

She’s a naughty one!

Now a second video from the farm has drawn over 2 million views in just a little over a month since it was posted.

This video begins with Muttais running freely through the grass and taking a moment to bother the resident cat. Then he spots his playmate, Dixie.

Of course, she takes a moment to pester the cat as well – because why not? – and then joins her friend who is impatiently waiting in the “let’s play” position.

The next thing we know, the two are laying next to each other in the grass having one heck of a laugh!

Over what? We have no clue. But it’s hard not to laugh along at the sounds these two make while it looks like they’re sharing a joke.

Are they squeaks? Giggles? Squeals?

Remember that song “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” by Ylvis? It was released all the way back in 2013 and is bound to get stuck in your head if you decide to play it, but maybe it’s time we acknowledge that it raised a legitimate question.

Ylvis gives us some options in the song for precisely what foxes are saying:

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Wa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow!
Hatee-hatee-hatee-ho!
Joff-tchoff-tchoffo-tchoffo-tchoff!
Jacha-chacha-chacha-chow!
Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!

No, none of those are right. The only option that comes close is “A-hee-ahee ha-hee!”

Maybe this kind of joyful play noise just can’t be spelled.

But we sure wish we were in on the joke!

“They sound like 6-year-olds who just inhaled helium…” said one commenter.

And that’s pretty close!

These two little goofballs are probably just chatting – after all, members of the family Canidae (including dogs and foxes) have a wide range of vocalizations. Calling it laughter would be giving it a human characteristic.

But there seems to be a lot of joy in their interaction.

For his part, Muttais is much tamer, simply kicking back in the grass. It’s Dixie who seems to be so full of glee that she can’t contain herself.

As Raines gets closer with her phone, the two speed away, tumbling over one another playfully and finding their next spot to chatter away.

A brief moment of tension is then followed by a friendly chase.

Off in the distance, two more foxes chase each other around.

This rescue farm looks like a blast! (Unless maybe you’re the cat who is constantly woken up from its nap by the sound of foxy chatter.)

When we leave the furry pack, everyone is taking a breather. But we know there’s more fun to come.
