Freezing dog found abandoned in icy field with 'plea for help' tied to collar
When people think about Florida, they think of hot weather and warm breezes, and while that is the usual weather for the state, it still gets cold in the winter.
One of the coldest nights in January of 2022 dropped down to below 23 degrees.
No one would want to be left out in such cold for even a few minutes, let alone overnight.
But that was what happened to one little dog in Polk County.
Tied to a fence post and abandoned, this pup was so cold that she couldn’t sit on the frozen grass, and jumped onto the fence she was tied to in order to give her frozen paws some relief.
It was early the next morning when Nichole Combee was out for a brisk morning walk when she came across a sight that she never expected to see.
She was shocked when she saw the pup and immediately went to help.
Around the frozen dog’s neck were a collar with the name Princess and a handwritten note saying “Take care of me”.
Nichole decided to do just that and brought Princess to her nearest veterinary office for care.
The vet staff took Princess in immediately and started working to warm her up.
When she was warm, the staff looked the pup over and discovered the cold was not her only issue.
Princess had a bad case of mange, worms, and a fever of 104, if Nichole hadn’t come along when she did, Princess may not have made it.
The vet’s office decided to do everything they could for the dog; treat her mange and worms, bring down her fever, and they are even going to vaccinate and spay her, all at their own cost.
Princess also has a spot waiting for her at the local Animal Control center, they will care for her until she is 100% recovered from all her ailments and spay surgery.
Nichole has also decided that, as soon as Princess has a clean bill of health, she is going to adopt the pup.
When asked how she felt about the situation, the woman said, “I think it’s awful. I don’t know how you could do that to any animal, especially something so forgiving and loving.”
It’s not just Nichole wondering who could do that to the sweet dog, the Polk County Shariff’s Office is now looking into who would abandon the animal in such a cruel way.
“We are investigating exactly what happened to get her in the situation she is in.” said Alicia Mantautou, a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office.
Hopefully, whoever left Princess tied to a fencepost overnight, on one of the coldest nights of the year, will be found and brought to justice.
Animal cruelty is a serious offence and the person who abandoned her needs to be held accountable for their actions.
Please remember, if you or anyone in your life are no longer able to take care of your pet, don’t abandon them, surrender them to a no-kill shelter or humane society where they have a second chance at life and love.
