Ingredients
- 3 potatoes, peeled and boiled
- 1 white onion
- 1 package of ground beef
- 1 teaspoon of chopped parsley
- 1 pinch of paprika
- 1 large bag of shredded mozzarella
- 1 cup of bechamel sauce
- salt and pepper
Would you like a recipe for the bechamel sauce, too?
- 5 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 4 cups of milk
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
Let’s get started with the recipe!
To make the bechamel sauce, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over low to medium heat. Add the flour and mix until there are no more lumps. Keep mixing and cooking for about six to seven minutes until it turns light gold in color.
At the same time, pour the milk in a saucepan and heat the milk right before it’s about to boil. When it’s hot, add the milk one cup at a time in the saucepan with the butter and flour mixture.
Whisk constantly and let it boil. Once it boils, let it simmer for ten minutes. Season with salt and nutmeg.
Boil water in a separate pot for the potatoes. Make sure you have roughly the same size of potatoes. Peel them and place inside the pot when the water is hot but not boiling.
Let it boil for about six to seven minutes until it becomes fork-tender.
While waiting for the water for the potato to warm up, preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, add the ground beef, parsley, and paprika. Season with salt and pepper. Dice the white onion and add to the beef. Mix until everything is incorporated.
Once the potatoes are done, remove from the water and slice into medallions. Layer the potato slices on the bottom of the glass dish. Add potato slices on the sides of the baking dish, too.
Start to form the beef mixture into meatballs. There should be enough to make 15 meatballs.
Once you have enough balls, place them one by one on the baking dish. Lay them on top of the bottom potato layer.
Make sure there is enough space between the meatballs for more potato slices.
Insert potato slices in between the meatballs to form their walls. You should have enough potato slices to form walls around all the meatball sides.
Pour the bechamel sauce on top of each meatball until it’s completely covered.
Top off with shredded mozzarella.
Pop into the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and serve.
Wasn’t that easy? Wasn’t it fun?
French cooking doesn’t have to be super intimidating. It can be fun and easy to make.
