Best friends of 60 years who grew up together just learned they’re brothers
Since they were in the sixth grade, Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane have already been friends.
Days, weeks, months, and years went by and their relationship as best buddies went deeper and deeper to a point when they already consider each other family.
It’s almost safe to say that they are going to be the best of friends for the rest of their lives.
But they were also more.
Before even knowing that they are half-brothers, they grew up in two different families that weren’t that far from each other.
Robinson was adopted at birth.
Macfarlane was raised by his grandmother and never had the chance to meet or even know his biological father.
The two best buddies studied in the same school and played football together at Punahou School.
“When we played for Punahou, we were both first string,” Macfarlane told KITV 4. “We’re brothers, playing side by side.”
A true and long-lasting friendship that’s made to last forever.
The two also played on the Aloha Airlines softball team and sailed on Robinson’s boat.
Of course, Macfarlane didn’t miss his best friend’s wedding.
They continued to share a lot of milestones in their lives and they couldn’t be happier with the kind of friendship that they have.
After 60 years of friendship, Macfarlane became curious about his identity, particularly his bloodline. So, he used DNA-matching websites to trace back his ancestors.
“My older daughter Cindy really wanted us to look for my dad and ‘Let’s get it done.’ So, the kids got me a gift,” Macfarlane told Steve Harvey during their appearance on Steve TV Show.
The gift was actually a subscription to Ancestry.com.
“So then we started digging into all the matches he started getting,” said Macfarlane’s daughter, Cindy Macfarlane-Flores, told CBS News.
As fate would have it, Robinson was also using the same website to learn about his background. Soon, the best friends for over 60 years discovered that they were actually blood-related.
“When we got the results back it was discovered that Alan wasn’t only my best friend, he was my brother,” Macfarlane said.
After all those years, they had no idea that they shared the same mother.
The revelation came as “a shock.”
“I had a younger brother that I lost when he was 19, so I never had nieces or nephews. I thought I’ll never know my birth mother, I’ll never have any nieces or nephews,” Robinson said.
Robinson and Macfarlane are from Oahu Hawaii.
They were born 15 months apart.
Although they’ve already been treating each other like real brothers for the past 60 years, there’s nothing sweeter than knowing they’re actually half-brothers.
“This guy was like an older brother all along,” Robinson said. “We’d go skin diving; I’d be making noise in the water, splashing around, he’d be teaching me how to do it right. He always came out of the water with a bigger string of fish. And I had the smallest.”
After all, just by looking at them, they really look a lot alike. Without knowing their real story, one might say they’re really brothers.
They have the same body built, same facial features, in fact, they also share the same fashion sense.
