Dad films tutorial on how to put kids to bed – and his creative tactics go viral

YouTuber Jordan Watson is an Aukland, New Zealand dad who has amassed a following of over half-a-million people thanks to his hilarious videos about how to interact with children on his channel How to DAD.

Beginning 4 years ago with his viral video “How To Hold a Baby,” which has been viewed over 3.7 million times, he’s since created dozens of other clips with instructions on everything from “How To Get Your Kid To Fetch A Beer From the Fridge” to “How To Get A Toddler To Eat Vegetables.”

“I’m just a typical Kiwi dad. Kind of taken to the extreme in the DIY style,” Watson told The Guardian of his viral fame. “People have just connected with it. I just think if I find it funny and it’s a laugh for parents, it ticks the right boxes.”

In a 2016 video (one of his most popular), Watson shows parents around the world some different tactics on “How To Put A Baby To Sleep.” No doubt people paid attention in the hopes of solving one of parenting’s greatest problems.

But before he begins, Watson asks baby Alba if she’s ready to go to sleep. She responds by simply plopping down in her crib as if getting a baby to bed is the easiest thing in the world.

With a perfect deadpan stare, he points out that it’s not always that easy.

Watson then launches into a series of maneuvers parents can use when a simple request doesn’t work – and, of course, they are all tongue-in-cheek.

First up is “The Shush Train,” in which parents “shh” gently like a train chugging along.

Of course, this would never work on a cranky toddler, but Alba once again falls right over on cue.

She’s quite the actress!

Next up is “The Standard Blanket” which involves nothing more than throwing down a child’s favorite blanky in their crib and having them dive right onto it and directly to sleep.

It works for Alba!

Watson then demonstrated “Method Acting,” in which he pretends he’s sleepy and hopes Alba will get the hint. As he drops to the floor, Alba just watches and giggles.

But as soon as he says “sleep,” BOOM. She plops down too.

Of course, when these easy methods don’t work, there’s always “The Tap-Out,” in which dad just goes and gets mom to do the dirty work instead and “The Hypnotist,” which relies on baby toys to lull children into a trance with the hope that leads to sleep.

While dad’s mangled lullaby seems to make Alba fall over in the hopes that the singing will stop, the next tactic is the sleepover.

Alba looks pretty confused when dad climbs into the crib with her. But, alas, she can simply lay down on command and does it yet again. Now THAT’S a great trick to teach toddlers!

Watson has a couple more tricks up his sleeve that make the video well worth watching, but it appears Alba is going to be game for just about anything.

We doubt that she truly takes a nap every time she plunks down into her crib, but sometimes getting a toddler horizontal is half the battle!
