Gas attendant paid for a stranger's fuel and is re-paid with 8 years of his salary
Helping people is something we should all strive for, and for this selfless gas station employee, a kind deed turned into a crowdfunding campaign that changed his life. People in, South Africa, started sending him money after he paid for a stranger’s gas, and you won’t believe how much they donated.
This is the kind of story that makes you want to pay it forward!
Nkosikho Mbele never expected one kind deed would earn him almost $100,000, but that’s exactly what happened
It was an ordinary day for the Shell gas station attendant from, Cape Town, South Africa, when a lady named, Monet, van Deventer, pulled up to the pump.
He proceeded to wash her windows and prepared to put petrol in her tank, but there was one problem. Monet had forgotten her wallet, so she had no way of paying to fill her empty tank.
“I said to him, ‘thanks for washing my windows but I can’t put petrol in today.’ He seemed stressed and shocked because he was looking at my fuel needle, which was already in the red,”
That’s when Nkosikho pulled out his own debit card to buy Monet some gas
Being the kind man that he is, Nkosikho, refused to let Monet run out of gas on the busy highway she was traveling on. He put 100 rand worth of gas in her car, telling her just to pay him back next time she was near the Shell.
“He said to me, ‘ma’am, you can’t run out of petrol on the N2’. And he said, ‘I’ll pay R100 and whenever you are near again you can just give me back my R100’,” Monet recounted.
Monet showed back up with the 100 rands and a box of chocolates, but that was just the start…
Monet works as an account manager for a software company, and after she posted the story to Facebook donations began pouring in as it went viral.

That’s when she consulted Nkosikho, and together they started a crowdfunding campaign that people could donate to. Neither of them could have ever imagined what it would turn into.
Before long, thousands of donations poured in
People all over were touched by Nkosikho’s kindness, even Shell caught wind of what he had done and decided to nominate him for the Regional Service Excellence Award.
Even more, Shell decided to donate $35,000 to a charity of his choice.
The donations totaled $94,000 by the time the campaign closed, which is 8 years worth of salary for the minimum wage employee
Nkosikho’s newfound wealth wasn’t the only thing that changed, he also became somewhat of a local celebrity. His life had changed seemingly overnight, and people in the town were now stopping to ask for selfies with the viral sensation.
“It was God’s doing, all of this. I feel like I’m dreaming. I’m shocked. I’m positive about us. As ordinary people, we can bring a change to life. You see, I was no one, but out of this small thing, the way that people who don’t even know me can see me,” said Nkosikho, “My life has been turned upside down.”
What an amazing story! It goes to show, you never know when a kind deed will bring you good fortune. For Nkosikho, he never expected anything in return, but the universe thought the humble man deserved to be rewarded.
