13-year-old genius gets accepted to study aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech
13-year-old Caleb Anderson is making headlines for getting in to Georgia Institute of Technology.
Just last year, he was a sophomore at Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, Georgia. Most of us were in 6th grade or so at that age but not this child prodigy. Even the people in his school can’t help but give him incredulous looks.
And even Caleb cannot believe it.
“I also have had those moments where, you know, ‘Man, I’m at college.’ And you know, this is incredible.”
He’d better get used to it.
He could have graduated from Chattahoochee Technical College in two years time. Except mom and dad, Claire and Kobi, wanted their son to attend a school that matched him.
Caleb was still a child when he began exhibiting signs of brilliance. He knew sign language at nine months when most of us where still drooling.
He began reading at the age of one, and when he turned two, it was fractions.. He qualified for Mensa at three.
Caleb is now a sophomore majoring in aerospace engineering. Other 13-year-olds would be playing video games or hanging around after school not wanting to do homework but not this guy.
He’s obviously a really smart kid but Caleb insists that he’s not.
“Number one, there are a lot of people who are smarter than me,” he explained. “And there are a lot of people who work harder than me, so compared to them, I’m definitely not smart.”
But just because he’s advanced doesn’t mean it comes easy for him.
“I’m being challenged,” he said. “I think I’m average here. The one thing that unites everybody in this school is that the work is terrifying.”
Caleb met with Georgia Tech’s president, visiting the labs and getting a tour of the school before he enrolled. The university also shared a video of his first few days there.
Caleb’s first day of classes was “pretty interesting” according to him. He failed to appreciate the size of the campus until he actually started going to his classes.
“I thought I was going to be here when I was 18, 19, but I’m here a lot earlier than I thought I would be,” Caleb said.
Caleb’s schooling does not come cheap.
Caleb wasn’t qualified to receive any Georgia merit-based educational scholarships. He was too young, so his parents had to figure out a way to pay for his tuition. Claire and Kobi are wonderful parents.
Various media outlets featured Caleb last year which led to the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation offering to cover his tuition fees.
“This is the kind of school I have been wanting to go to for a very long time, and I am finally here,” Caleb said.
Caleb does feel the pressure but he’s going to live up to the expectations.
“I’m a pretty big risk-taker. I’m taking the fast track but it’s going to be very hard. That’s what drives me cause I know that if I don’t do this now, this chance is never going to happen again.”
Caleb is on the road to earning his master’s degree from the university. He plans on pursuing a career at SpaceX, then starting his own company. He wants to be a role model for black teens and other kids.
