Black bears on screen hilariously outwit TV-watching German shepherd
I’d be lying if I said technology can’t be quite scary sometimes. With how much some websites can pinpoint your exact location, or how much smarter AI programs are getting, it’s hard not to get a little bit scared.
So I can’t really blame this dog here for getting a little freaked out by what’s on this TV screen.
Our dog is a lovable German Shepherd. And while the breed is famous for being intelligent and trainable, they’re not that intelligent.
This one here is watching some TV with his parents.
On the screen is a family of American Black Bears, which the Shepherd watches attentively.
He doesn’t seem to think they’re a threat or anything. All he’s feeling is genuine curiosity.
Though that curiosity will soon turn into visible confusion as we’ll see.
The dog keeps watching, wondering what the bears will do next.
Black Bear families are often composed of a mother and 2 or more cubs. Black Bear cubs are dependent on their mother for the first 1 and a half years of their life. But here’s another thing about bears: They’re part of the suborder Caniformia, the “dog-like” branch of Carnivoran mammals.
Not carnivore, mind you. Carnivoran.
A carnivore is an animal that eats meat, but a Carnivoran is a mammal that belongs to the order Carnivora. Basically, one’s a diet and the other is a group of related animals (known as a “clade”).
And Carnivora has two major branches underneath it: One that gave rise to cats and other animals like them and another that led to dogs and other dog-like things.
And that includes the bears.
So in case you’ve ever wondered why bears have very dog-like heads and ears, then you’re not crazy. They are, in fact, cousins of the dogs. That might partly explain why this German Shepherd is so fixated on the bear family.
But once the cubs on the TV start moving off-screen, that’s when Shepherd’s confusion begins.
He wonders why they vanished and thinks they might have gone to the room adjacent to where the TV is.
His parents think it’s adorable how clueless he is and can’t contain their laughter.
When mama bear also walks off-screen, his confusion increases and now he really wants to get to the bottom of it. He steps back and decides he has to start looking. Dogs can be their cutest when they’re clueless, and this is no exception.
The dog now begins searching.
He looks behind the TV hoping to find the bears there. Nope, nothing.
It should be said that he might not even know what bears are. These cousins of his on the mammal family tree are just weird, chunky dogs for all he cares.
He can’t help it anymore and hurriedly looks behind the wall, into the bedroom. Have the bears gone off into there?
After peeping and finding no bears, his poor doggy brain explodes.
And his parents burst into hysterical laughter over it. Maybe a little mean, but hey, it’s cute and they can’t help it!
