German Shepherd is 100 percent certain he’s really a bird

We all have dreams about our futures. When we get a bit older, they take shape as something more realistic, but when we’re young, we’re told we can be anything we want when we grow up.

And a German Shepherd named Kai has decided he’d like to be a bird.

Ever since he was a puppy, Kai has been obsessed with the birdbath in his family’s yard.

At first, it was a fun, new place to grab a drink on a warm day.

“We had a pool in the backyard, but he would always go to the birdbath to get a drink because it was closer,” Kai’s owner Ashley Shell told The Dodo.

(We believe she’s referring to a kiddie pool since large pools aren’t a great place for dogs to take a drink due to the chemicals we put in them to keep them clean.)

Eventually, the pup began watching the birds, and – we can only assume – thought something along the lines of “Hey, I can do that!”

That’s when he began using the birdbath just like a bird – part bath, part drinking dish.

Kai lives with lots of other animals and plenty of German Shepherd siblings, so it’s not like he didn’t have doggie role models.

He just wanted to forge a different path.

Of course, when you see your goofy German Shepherd in a birdbath, it’s only fair to grab the camera (at the very least to embarrass him with the footage in front of his friends when he’s older).

Shell couldn’t resist recording these moments.

But one moment she caught was particularly hilarious; Kai grabbed a drink and then turned around in the bowl a few times (you know, to get comfortable) and then plopped himself right down in there!

“I started recording him because he started jumping into it to get a drink and I was impressed by the balance,” she said. “This video was the first time he actually jumped up and lay down in it.”

To be fair, a bath is a great stress reliever – and the family has multiple German Shepherds.

Maybe Kai just needed some “me” time.

Despite the goofy antics, Shell insists that Kai can also be the smart, regal dog his breed is known to be.

“He’s very intelligent, always figuring stuff out,” Shell said. “But he also has a silly side and loves to play.”

Of course, all of this happened when Kai was just a puppy.

Just like human kids, dogs eventually grow up and grow out of some of their sillier antics, for better or worse.

After about 6 months, Kai quite literally grew out of that particular behavior because he could no longer fit in the birdbath.

Now, that’s for the birds, and much of the time you can find him playing with his siblings.

However, this year, Kai got a kiddie pool AND some baby ducklings!

The cuteness is nearly too much to handle.

It turns out that Kai really does have an affinity for birds. (That, or they’re getting revenge on him for using the birdbath for so long.)
