At one breeder’s location, some German Shepherds seem to have the dream life.

They get to run around and play all they want, in an open grassy place. Once they reach 8 weeks old, they will be adopted into loving families and go on to great lives. But for now, they have a few weeks to play with one another, and bond with their parents.

They are so excited and energetic, running all over the place. When puppies are young, they have boundless energy and need to run around a lot. Play is essential to puppies growing up.

Why do puppies like to play so much?

These puppies are playing with their siblings, also known as their littermates. In addition to being plain old fun, allowing puppies to play often, especially at a young age, is essential to their development as adults. Vet Street explains:

“Play with littermates is very important for learning social skills. Puppies play with each other by play fighting, and often bite one another (or their mother) too hard. When this happens the recipient squeals, and if the biter doesn’t stop, the bite recipient will refuse to continue playing.”

This style of play-fighting is important for young dogs to learn how to play with one another. They develop the skills to play nicely, which will help them make friends after they are adopted. That’s also a reason why it’s important for their parents to play with them.

Dad loves to play.

Fortunately, these pups have their dad to show them how it’s done. When the big German Shepherd arrives on the scene, he is ready to run around with the best of them. He’s these puppies’ father, and he is so excited to help them out!

In the video, you can see the dad running from his pack of pups. But he’s not scared-he’s letting them chase him! At some points in the video, you can see what looks like biting, but that’s actually just dad trying to teach these puppies how to play nicely and to respect his space.

They’re all having a good time and can’t get enough of playing!

Puppies are typically ready to leave their parents by 8 weeks old. Adopting a dog too soon can hurt them developmentally, as they haven’t spent enough time around their parents and might miss out on some essential life lessons.

As puppies grow up, their play styles change and they can start to play some games that involve humans too, like fetch. But at such a young age, playing with mom and dad is super important.
