Meet Levi, the German shepherd trained to detect bowel cancer

Levi von Heisenberg is curious and brilliant. His skills are nothing short of impressive. Think being an asset to healthcare workers, stepping up to help detect illnesses and in the process save lives… abilities that will leave anyone in awe. He’s quite intelligent and those who know him have nothing but good things to say about him.

Everyone just adores this German Shepherd.

That’s right, Levi von Heisenberg is a standout German Shepherd with the ability to sniff out bowel cancer.

We all know German Shepherds are incredible working dogs. They’re versatile, smart, and can excel in most fields. More than what they can do for their human counterparts at work, they also make amazing pets because of their courage and loyalty.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that Levi aced the trial for sniffing out organic compounds released from bowels.

Levi wasn’t born with this gift of course, but through hard work and obedience, Levi was able to complete a trial for detecting bowel cancer in urine samples.

Boasting a success rate of 98.4%, Levi truly makes Pauline Blomfield, the chief executive of K9 Medical Detection NZ, proud. The happy dog’s task involves detecting specific volatile organic compounds released from bowel cancer without actually sniffing people. If this proves successful and promises accuracy and efficacy, bowel cancer patients can immediately be scheduled for colonoscopies and treatment as opposed to waiting for weeks to months for tests and diagnosis.

Blomfield has over four decades of experience with dogs, that’s why she has faith in what they can do for cancer patients.

She believes that once all trials are successful, it would bring proof that the non-invasive screening tool will be instrumental in saving lives and making a difference for bowel cancer patients.

A firm believer in the importance of early detection, Blomfield’s main goal when she set up K9 Medical Detection NZ was to create a diagnostic urine test to help fight cancer. She shares,

“By utilising a dog’s natural abilities we have the potential to assist the health system, help prioritise patients, and be cost-effective. We hope these results give confidence to medical professionals that our research is robust and rigorous and scientifically-based.”

Because German Shepherds are intelligent, highly trainable, and have over 225 million scent receptors, Blomfield believes training the dogs for the task will make a significant contribution to her goal. What a truly wonderful step for science and healthcare!

Levi the game-changer doesn’t know that his abilities could help countless patients and their families.

Imagine how many more German Shepherds can be trained for the same task, and how amazing that can be for healthcare workers and cancer patients. Not only is it safer, but it’s also cost-effective, too. (Let’s not forget endearing and delightful! Who wouldn’t want a German Shepherd helping them?)

We can’t wait to hear of more amazing things from Levi!

He proves that with consistent training, proper care, and lots and lots of love, there is really nothing German Shepherds can’t do.
