Police call in heroic German shepherd to find 90-year-old woman lost in the forest overnight

All dogs are absolutely marvelous creatures, but German Shepherds are definitely one of the most clever, intelligent, and loyal dog breeds out there. It’s no wonder why you see a ton of police or military K9 dogs being Shepherds, as they have excellent tracking skills – something that definitely came in handy for this missing person case.

One day, the 90-year-old elderly woman Loudell Hubbard went missing in a forest area, and especially given her age and medical condition, police wanted to find her as quickly as possible.

The trusty four-footer Saby has been working as a K9 police dog for the Birmingham Police SRT K9 unit and was a perfect fit to assist in this worrying disappearance. The beautiful German Shepherd has been deployed in the police force for about two years, working alongside his human partner and handler, Officer Dustin Brock.

K9 Units such as Saby are absolutely essential and unmissable for the police force, as they excel at things and can make police work a ton easier.

The elderly woman was also suffering from dementia, meaning the situation was very serious and urgent.

Saby and Dustin were one of the police teams that was dispatched to help search for Loudell. It’s not exactly clear what happened, but they only knew that the woman disappeared in the woods not far from her home in Birmingham, Alabama.

To make matters worse, nightfall was approaching, and they wanted to find her before that happened and Loudell would become even more vulnerable.

Even though hopes of finding her seemed to diminish by the minute, Saby managed to get a track rather quickly and managed to locate the woman’s scent on a trail in the woods. The officers were a step closer to finding her and were determined to bring her back home.

After a little while, Saby actually managed to find the woman. She slipped, fell into a creek, and couldn’t get up again.

To try and make herself as comfortable as possible, she used her purse as a sort of pillow, but whatever she tried, she couldn’t get back on her feet. Luckily, the police officers and Saby arrived to help her get back up.

Luckily, Loudell wasn’t severely injured – although she was still in shock and her body was covered in bruises.

The team is quite confident that the rescue operation could’ve gone very differently if it weren’t for the excellent search dog Saby.

“It’s impossible for us to duplicate what he does and do his job as fast as he does,” Dustin told WSET-TV while praising his K9 partner. “The same time Richard came around the corner Saby was pulling me towards the creek. I come around and she was laying in the creek.”

It was a scary sight at first, as Loudell was actually lying with her face down, raising doubts whether she was still alive.

“I yelled ‘Ma’am can you hear me?’ She raised her head up and then we just went to her,” Officer Richard Wright recalled. “When we got the call, I was thinking if it was my grandmother I would hope someone would use all resources to go find her.”

Loudell’s neighbor, Frederick Jones, was very thankful that the officers managed to find her quickly, and never lost hope.

“At the time everyone was still hopeful,” he said. “They had faith and were positive.”

“It was joy [when they found her],” he added. “Everybody was thanking God and just elated. Really, it brought tears to your eyes that she was OK.”

Luckily, this is a story that ended well thanks to the amazing efforts of this hero rescue dog.
