Sweet German shepherd makes the family’s new cat feel right at home

Anya has always been a good dog.

She loves to help mom with chores around the house.

“She would always stick her head in the dryer when I was doing laundry, and then one day she just started taking the laundry out and handing it to me,” mom Lori told The Dodo.

But Anya didn’t stop with the laundry. She likes to help mom with the dishes too.

Every time mom opens the dishwasher Anya will help her take out the dishes.

“From there she just started doing other stuff. Anything I’m doing she just wants to help out,” Lori said.

“If I’m taking out the garbage, she tries to take it out of my hand. I was bringing in groceries one day, she just grabbed a bag and followed me with a bag. She just naturally wants to help out.”

Now that Anya’s family rescued a kitten, Anya wanted to help with the new kitten too.

The kitten was found living in a dumpster at Lori’s husband’s car wash.

“I couldn’t take it. We caught her and brought her home,” Lori said.

The cat was extremely scared when she first arrived.

“She was a little bit shell-shocked and probably very leery of anything new. There’s a kitty door going into the basement and Anya would just sit at that kitty door looking through, just staring at her,” Lori said.

Anya just really wanted to meet the cat, who they named Munchie.

And to be honest, Munchie was a little bit curious about Anya too.

“And then Anya wouldn’t leave her side of her crate. Finally we were able to open the crate. It was a gradual process,” Lori said.

It wasn’t long before Anya and Munchie became friends.

Anya decided that it was her job to keep Munchie entertained.

So, she would pick up a shoestring and let Munchie chase it. Now, Anya always makes sure Munchie has her toys and that she has play time.

“Anya kind of helped us break the ice with her. She is the one that helped Munchie make that adjustment from being downstairs in the basement to being with the family. They tease each other a lot. If Munchie’s toy’s out now, Anya will still pick it up and play with her.”

Anya is always looking after her buddy Munchie and making sure she’s OK.

“I get so emotional when I think about it but Anya is truly an angel,” Lori said. “It is just moving to see little Munchie with her. It’s just remarkable to see daily what she does.”
