German shepherds are playful and curious animals. It’s perhaps not surprising then that they sometimes have been known to get into mischief.

That’s exactly what happened recently when a German shepherd named Maverick got a little too excited when the boat he was riding in got near a pod of dolphins.

Maverick had likely never even seen dolphins before, so it would have been a fairly startling scenario for the dog.

There must have been so many thoughts running through his head at the moment, such as “who are these water people?” “What do they smell like?” “Should I swim with them?” “When do I eat next?”

That last one just being a standard thought that goes through dogs’ brains every few moments.

Maverick is infatuated with a pod of swimming dolphins.

Maverick was aboard his human father’s fishing boat when it swam next to a pod of dolphins.

This is not uncommon for any type of boat, as dolphins have been known to enjoy surfing the wakes of boats to give them some added forward momentum.

The swimming dolphins had quite an impact on Maverick.

He was transfixed by the swimming cetaceans in the opening moments of the video.

Whenever one would breach the water, Maverick’s eyes would light up and he would tense his muscles in an alert fashion.

“I’ve…I’ve got to swim with these dolphins.”

Watching Maverick in this video it is clear the dog is experiencing an intense urge to dive into the water and investigate these swimming water animals.

He’s basically being driven 100% by his instincts, which would ultimately lead him to make a mistake.

Finally, Maverick is unable to fight off the urge any longer and he jumps right into the ocean. Perhaps he was expecting to just start swimming alongside the dolphins.

Maverick realizes he made a very big mistake.

The second Maverick hit the water, his disposition changed. He knew he made a very big mistake.

Perhaps not realizing how deep the water was, or how quickly the boat he was in was moving, Maverick jumped in and then immediately tried swimming back to the boat.

This proves that dogs, like humans, are capable of making instantly regrettable decisions.

The two men have a good laugh.

The two men in the boat couldn’t stop laughing at what their canine companion had done.

They quickly stopped the boat so it would stop drifting away from poor Maverick.

While the boat was slowing, Maverick’s eyes lit up as he floated away from him, perhaps he was wondering if he would ever see dry land again.

Maverick gets back in the boat.

The two men pulled Maverick from the boat, all the while still laughing at what the dog had done.

Poor Maverick was just so excited watching those dolphins swim that he couldn’t hold back and just had to jump in the water with them.

Something tells us Maverick will definitely think twice before he makes the same decision again, however.

Maverick’s antics have gone viral with many who have viewed them feeling compelled to leave a comment on YouTube.

“Maverick immediately realized that this pool was WAY bigger than he’s used to,” wrote one viewer.

“‘I’m a dog, I’m a dog, I’M A DOLPHIN…….nope, I’m a dog,'” wrote another.

“Maverick couldn’t help himself. The Dolphins were having way too much fun he had to have a go.. brilliant attempt.”
