German Shepherd dogs are known for their bravery, their smarts, and their strength. It’s what makes them such great police and service dogs, after all. On the other hand, they have a few other traits that run just as strongly that don’t get noticed all that often. Compassion and kindness are two of them, as this sweet German Shepherd shows.

Tennyson (Tenny for short) is a kind-hearted German Shepherd that just got a BIG surprise when his human brought home a tiny kitten.

German Shepherd dogs tend to get pretty big, and we can see why some people might think it’s too dangerous to have one hovering over a baby kitten. Tennyson, however, shows us that the size of their body is nothing when compared to the size of their hearts. In fact, Tenny is so sweet-natured that the only thing he cares about is being an awesome big brother to his new kitty sibling, and there’s a video to prove it.

Tenny’s owner pulled out a camera to record her tiny kitten while he tried to climb the stairs but, at first, the only thing you can see is the German Shepherd because he’s hovering over the kitten so closely.

At the beginning of the video, you can hear Tenny’s human telling him to get out of the way. She wanted the kitten to have a chance to learn how to take the stairs on its own. Her German Shepherd, though, felt very differently about the situation.

At first, Tenny trusts mom’s instinct and steps over the kitten and moves up a few steps so the kitten has a clear path. Apparently, this was some good motivation for the kitty, because the little fluffball slowly climbed his way up a couple of the steps.

The rise of the steps are taller than the kitten, so he adorably jumped to get up on each one.

“No, let him do it himself,” you can hear Tenny’s human saying to him.

As the German Shepherd keeps careful watch over the kitten as he struggles his way up the stairs, you can see the desire to help his little buddy grow deeper and deeper. It’s obvious he won’t be able to just sit by much longer.

After making it up a few steps, the kitten gets just a step beneath Tenny.

Apparently, the German Shepherd just can’t bear to watch his small friend struggle with the stairs anymore. He bends his head down to try and nudge the kitty upstairs with his nose. Unfortunately, the small kitten wasn’t having any of that!

When his plan to support the kitten with his nose doesn’t work, Tenny decides that enough is enough. He is getting that little kitten up the stairs!

The German Shepherd quickly catches the tiny kitten’s head in his mouth and turns to take him up the stairs.

Though it sounds, and even looks, a bit horrifying, the kitty couldn’t be any more safe than in his doggy friend’s jaws. Tenny gently holds the cat in his mouth and walks ever so carefully upstairs. It’s clear that he is being as gentle as he possibly can with his tiny friend.

When Tenny finally reaches the top of the stair with the kitten in his mouth, the first thing he does is carefully set him back down in a safe little corner.
