Whenever German shepherd hears the word “Oops” he turns into a Hoover

Most dogs love to eat.

In many cases, they will eat things that no one else will, even food that has fallen on the ground.

One dog, in particular, has learned to respond to his owners when he hears them say the word, “oops.” When that happens, you better watch out, because soon Heinz will be there ready to clean up.

His owner, Karyn Dietz, noticed this about Heinz, a lovable German shepherd who is named after the ketchup brand, while she was working in the kitchen one day.

“I realized a few months ago that he is triggered to at least lookup or to come to check for food if I say ‘oops,’ ‘dammit’ or ‘shit,’” Dietz told The Dodo. “He watches like a hawk when we eat popcorn.”

Heinz is just doing his part

Fortunately, the behavior hasn’t interfered with the everyday running of the household. For the most part, Heinz is just there to do his part in keeping the house clean.

“He’s always been all about food, like most dogs,” Dietz said. “Thankfully he doesn’t hover too badly when [we’re] cooking, but often keeps a watchful and opportunistic eye on anyone eating, especially the kids.”

Of course, this means that whenever someone is in the kitchen, Heinz is there waiting for his opportunity to gobble up a quick snack. Heinz’s hearing is so good now that he doesn’t even have to be in the kitchen to know when food is available for the taking. All he has to hear are the magic words and he is there.

Heinz is as smart as they come

Heinz, like many German shepherds, is smart, to begin with. And so, when he put two and two together, it was only natural that he would respond in the way that he has.

Finding the whole situation adorable, Dietz was able to capture Heinz on video running into the room when she said oops. Posting the video to her TikTok, everyone who has watched it on the social media platform seems to think the same when it comes to Heinz’s behavior.

“I set him up for this video because what actually happened moments before was, I legitimately said “oops,” and he came bouldering down from upstairs,” Dietz said.

The future for Heinz and his food-seeking ways

And while Heinz’s family finds his food gobbling efforts funny, they don’t want it to become an unhealthy obsession. They may even have to come up with some new words for expressing the fact that they have dropped something. But, knowing Heinz, he probably will figure out any new words soon enough.
