German Shepherd who was lost at sea for 5 weeks is finally reunited with owner
Like most things, dogs have a variety of reactions when it comes to water. Some hate it, some love it, and some simply don’t care one way or the other. Now, whether they can swim well or not is another matter entirely. Chances are, though, that if a dog loves water, then it can more than likely swim.
Fortunately, this was the case with a German shepherd named Luna. Her ability to swim probably ended up saving her life.
Going on fishing trips with his German shepherd best friend
Nick Haworth, Luna’s owner, is a fisherman. He would take her with him while fishing off the coast of Southern California, near San Clemente Island 40 miles off the shore of Los Angeles. So, it would be no surprise that Luna would walk and lay along the edge of the boat.
Luna fell from the boat and was lost at sea
While out fishing in February 2016, Luna somehow fell from the boat and became lost at sea. Around two miles off the shore of San Clemente Island, Haworth feared the worst after an initial search didn’t turn up anything.
While Luna was a good swimmer, Haworth thought there was no way she could swim the two miles to the island’s shore. Not wanting to give up hope Haworth notified the Navy about what had happened. The Navy has a base on the island and so, if she turned up there, they would find her.
Accepting the inevitable
As for Haworth, he stuck around for two more days to continue searching for Luna. Ultimately, though, he had no success. So, it was with a heavy heart that he returned home minus his best friend. The Navy continued to search for a week but was unable to find Luna. Eventually, all involved admitted that she was probably dead.
Haworth receives a call from the Navy
Five weeks later, Haworth got a call. He was out fishing again, grieving the loss of his dog, and so his reception was spotty. The call was from the Navy.
Somehow Luna had survived.
As he spoke to the person on the phone, they explained how some employees at the Naval base had arrived for work one morning and there sat Luna, wagging her tail at them. She had somehow managed to swim the two miles to the shore of San Clemente Island.
Reunited with his best friend
And while Luna was a little thinner, she was relatively okay. As for Haworth, he couldn’t wait to be reunited with her.
“I always knew she was a warrior,” Haworth said on Facebook.
Luna’s survival was truly a miracle, not only was she able to swim two miles to shore, but she was then able to survive for another five weeks on her own until she was found.
