It’s a common joke that dogs will jump on you and greet you when you get home from work, then act exactly the same when you get out of the bathroom.

This may be indeed funny, but it indicates the need dogs have to share the excitement to see you, whether it’s after you’ve been apart for eight hours or for ten minutes! Their brain works exactly the same in both cases.

Dogs are emotional creatures, just like humans. So, just like you would be overjoyed to meet your best friend after a few weeks, dogs act in a similar way. Actually, it is this common trait that has led them to become friends over the years.

In fact, the dog brain has receptors that make them realize that someone comes home, and therefore, causes them to exhibit their affection towards them. And this is true for basically any breed, but there is one that is extra loyal and forms a special bond with its human: the German shepherd.

“German Shepherds that are treated with love, kindness, and discipline, and who are given a sense of purpose can grow into one of the most wonderful dogs you will meet,” experts agree.

And proof of this loyalty is German shepherd Freya, the dog who is the protagonist in the video below.

Freya’s dad had to leave her with his mom for several months as he had to relocate for work. During the months they were separated, the man used to communicate with them through Skype so his mom and his dog could see him and he, in turn, could make sure they were fine.

However, a couple of Skype sessions per week can’t make up for the absence, the missed belly rubs and head bumps Freya so desperately needed! But he knew it wasn’t going to last forever and he would soon be back.

So, when he did, the family decided to surprise Freya and even record the moment of their reunion, as they knew it was bound to be emotional.

Indeed, as we can see in the short clip, the woman opens the door, while the man is hiding on the corner of the house to surprise his dog once she’s outside. Freya is happy to see the woman, but something urges her to go outside. She might have even smelled her favorite human already!

Once Freya is outside, she spots the man and lets out a cry that cannot leave anyone unaffected. Poor doggie had missed her friend so much!

She keeps barking and crying for joy, while she can’t stop licking the man as an expression of her love and affection towards him.

The man is obviously excited, too. He keeps petting her and giving her head and belly rubs, but she just can’t sit down and enjoy them because she’s too enthusiastic to see him again after all these months apart.

Towards the end of the video, Freya surrenders and sits like a baby on his lap, letting her best friend pet her. She really couldn’t have asked for a better evening!
